Abstract This study aimed to confirm the present of dam effect on weaning weight trait of Boer goat crosses. A total of 1081 weaning weight records (standardized to 77 days) from 527 does and 16 bucks were analyzed. Data were derived from Boer, Boerja F1 (Boer 3 × Jawarandu ?), and Boerja F2 (Boer 3 × Boerja F1 ?). Two statistic models namely Model 1 and Model 2 were compared using F-test for overall significance. Model 1 is Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) which consist only fixed effect as factor, while Model 2 is mixed model which includes fixed effect as factor and dam as a random effect. The fixed effects in both models are buck, doe type, parity of the dam, sex of kid, birth type, and year of observation. Results showed that buck, doe type, sex, birth type, and observation year affect significantly (P<0.05) to weaning weight, while parity had no effect (P=0.53). Based on the model’s comparison, there was a significant difference (P<0.05) between Model 1 and Model 2. Therefore, it is confirmed the present of dam effect on the weaning weight trait of Boer goat crosses in the studied population.

Abstract Background Swimmer puppy syndrome is a disease found in neonatal puppies mainly characterized by the inability to stand, but its direct cause is unknown. Since swimmer puppies were observed infrequently but continuously among the Labrador retriever colony at the Hokkaido Guide Dogs for the Blind Association in Japan, based on their birth record and pedigree, factors related to the onset of swimmer puppy syndrome in Labrador retrievers were examined. Results The total number of offspring over seven years was 436, of which 16 were swimmer puppies. Most of the affected puppies except one recovered steadily. As for the swimmer puppies, the litter size was significantly lower, and the body weights on the 10th and 28th day after delivery were significantly higher than the non-symptomatic puppies. These results suggested that the onset may be related to weight gain in the neonatal stages due to a small litter size. According to the genetic analysis, 26 ancestors common to the affected individuals were confirmed, but the causative individual could not be identified with the inbreeding coefficient. The heritability of the swimmer-puppy onset trait was 0.80, and the heritability for the the 10th -day body-weight trait was equally high at 0.78, both of which strongly suggest genetic involvement. Conclusions In this study, the onset of swimmer puppy syndrome in the Labrador retrievers was associated with litter size and early weight gain, and result of study suggests that genetic influence might be involved.

The objectives of this paper were to verify the influence of the multi-breed model and pedigree structure in the estimates of the genetic components to birth weight in a mestizo herd. Using 1234 birth weight records in two ways, one dataset with complete pedigree information (n = 1028) and another with incomplete pedigree information (n = 1234). The pedigree was composed for 10 sires, 366 and 448 dams for complete and incomplete pedigree, respectively. Used for analysis the maximum restricted likelihood method about the animal model, considering the birth weight trait, for a dataset with or not complete pedigree, used the WOMBAT program. The direct heritability coefficients in both datasets did not present large difference, 0.06 and 0.09 to best models in the complete and incomplete pedigree, respectively. However, in the incomplete pedigree, the maternal heritability was 0.29. The residual variance, which on the best model of the dataset with complete pedigree presented 0.51 and 0.35 for the best model of the dataset with incomplete pedigree. Concluding, we find the influence of de multi-breed model only in the dataset with complete pedigree, that considered the direct and breed effects. In the dataset with incomplete pedigree, the better model was that considered the direct and maternal additive effects.

Jatropha curcas is a highly promising species for biodiesel production in Burkina Faso and other countries in the tropics. It is rustic, grows in warm regions and is easily cultivated. These characteristics and high-quality oil yields from the seeds have made it a priority for biodiesel programs. Consequently, this plant merits genetic investigations aimed at improving yields. The present study was conducted to determine the extent of genetic variability and relationships among 30 accessions from Burkina Faso using 7 qualitative characters and 20 quantitative characters. For most of the traits, there were highly significant differences among the accessions. A positive and significant correlation between the 100-seed weight trait and the oil content trait was observed. The oil content trait is significantly and positively influenced by growth traits such as plant height and crown diameter. Based on the petiole base pigmentation, three morphotypes were identified: green morphotype, purple morphotype and brown morphotype. The green morphotype was characterized by very high oil content and high 100-seed weight while the brown morphotype presents low oil content and low 100-seed weight. The purple morphotype registered a high oil content and medium 100-seed weight. These results are important for the continuity of breeding programs, aimed at obtaining cultivars with high grain yield and high oil content in seeds.

Abstract. The research aims to study the inheritance of a thousand-seed weight trait by F1 and F2 hybrids peas. Research methods. The study was conducted at the Chishminskiy plant breeding center of the Bashkir Research Institute – the Subdivision of the Russian Science Academy, located in the Cis-Ural steppe zone, in 2017–2019. The paper describes hybridization with two parental pairs, reciprocal crosses, and resulting pea hybrids. Five varieties were analyzed: Shikhan, Chishminskiy 75, Chishminskiy 80, Chishminskiy 95, Melkosemyannyy 2. The resulting seeds were divided into groups: large, medium-large, medium, medium-small, small. The standard deviation (σ), the coefficient of variation (Vc, %), heritability estimate (H2), and the degree of dominance (hp) were determined. Statistical data were analyzed in Microsoft Office Excel 2010 using Statistica 7.0. Results. As a result of the conducted experiments, F1 hybrid peas showed lower thousand-seed weight than the large-seeded parent plants. Whereupon, the large-seeded genotype of a mother plant had a greater effect on the manifestation of this trait in hybrids. F2 hybrid peas expressed a thousand-seed weight trait in an intermediate fashion. However, the average values of this trait were much lower than in F1 hybrids. The coefficient of variation Vc in F2 plants was 24.3–33.3%, the degree of dominance hp was 0.20–0.32 (incomplete dominance of the trait). Scientific novelty. The inheritance of a thousand-seed weight in regional varieties that distinctly differ on this trait and in hybrids obtained by crossing was studied for the first time in conditions of the Republic of Bashkortostan. New large-seeded and small-seeded sources for pea breeding were identified.

Bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP7) and BMP15, which encode members of the BMP family, have been identified by whole-genome resequencing as breeding-related genes that overlap with a known quantitative trait locus for reproductive traits. In this study, we investigated the effects of variants at the BMP7 and BMP15 gene loci on sow reproductive traits. We isolated 669 and 1213 bp sequences of the 3’-untranslated region (3’-UTR) of the porcine BMP7 and BMP15 genes, respectively, and detected several RNA regulatory elements, such as miRNA response elements and AU-rich elements. Pooled DNA sequencing identified two novel point mutations (viz., BMP7 c.1569A>G and BMP15 c.2366G>A) in the 3’-UTR. Association analysis showed that the c.1569A>G polymorphism was associated with the litter weight trait in a Large White pig population. Furthermore, analysis of the combined genetic effects revealed that AA/GA and AG/GG were the favorable combined genotypes for the total number of piglets born (TNB) and the total number of piglets born alive (NBA), whereas. Together, our findings confirm that BMP7 and BMP15 are candidate genes for porcine reproductive performance.

Performance of developed genotype RMT 08-2 was evaluated in central, eastern and north-eastern states of India under rain-fed condition for quantitative and qualitative traits. It gave highest seed yield over checks in zone III and V. Morphologically plants were erect, medium spreading in nature and primary branches with dichotomous habit. Plants height ranged from 107124 (cm) which matured in 82-112 days. Mature seeds were round in shape and blackish brown in colour. No significant difference between RVT-2 and checks were observed for test weight trait. An average oil yield 485 (kg/h) was recorded over 7 places which was 10% higher than both checks i.e. 14.12% and 11.24% under AICRP trials. Maximum seed yield was obtained on farmers field during 2013-14 and 2014-15 which was 1500 (kg/h) and 1215 (kg/h) that is 33.42% and 26.30% respectively over farmers own seeds. At Morena center, highest seed yield (1753 kg/h) over Bhawani (1512 kg/h) was 15.94% higher than check whereas RVT-2 gave 2245 (kg/h) against Bhawani (1975 kg/h) which was 13.67% higher. DNA finger printing indicated that primers PUT-19, PUT-96, PUT-149, PUT-169, PUT-181 and PUT-271 are useful in generating unique profile of RVT-2 containing 27 bands for its discrimination from other varieties.
