Understanding the adaptive functions of increasing brain size have occupied scientists for decades. Here, taking the general perspective of the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis, the question of how brains change in size will be considered in two developmental frameworks. The first framework will consider the particular developmental mechanisms that control and generate brain mass, concentrating on neurogenesis in a comparative vertebrate context. The consequences of limited adult neurogenesis in mammals, and the dominating role of duration of neurogenesis for mammalian evolution will be discussed for the particular case of the teleost versus mammalian retina, and for paths of brain evolution more generally. The second framework examines brain mass in terms of life history, particularly the features of life history that correlate highly, if imperfectly, with brain mass, including duration of development to adolescence, duration of parental care, body and range size, and longevity. This covariation will be examined in light of current work on genetic causes and consequences of covariation in craniofacial bone groupings. The eventual development of a multivariate structure for understanding brain evolution which specifically integrates formerly separate layers of analysis is the ultimate goal.

Background: Henosepilachna vigintioctomaculata is a polytrophic pest, causing the greatest damage to plants from the nightshade family. The study aimed to research the resistance of potato cultivars that are promising for breeding to damage by a potato ladybug in laboratory and field experiments. Methods: In laboratory experiments, the indicators of fertility, mortality and duration of development, morphological anomalies and the effect of potato varieties on the composition of Epilakhna’s hemolymph were studied. The sample consisted of 50 individuals with a slight predominance of females. The experiment used 13 varieties of potatoes. Result: A specific dependence of the frequency of phytophage anomalies on the variety was revealed. The influence of nutrition on survival and the timing of ontogenesis has been established. The results obtained indicate the high breeding value of the material when recommending it for cultivation in regions with a high number of pests, as well as when creating new varieties.

Abstract Early experience can prepare offspring to adapt their behaviors to the environment they are likely to encounter later in life. In several species of ants, colonies show ontogenic changes in the brood-to-worker ratio that are known to have an impact on worker morphology. However, little information is available on the influence of fluctuations in the early social context on the expression of behavior in adulthood. Using the ant Lasius niger, we tested whether the brood-to-worker ratio during larval stages influenced the level of behavioral variability at adult stages. We raised batches of 20 or 180 larvae in the presence of 60 workers until adulthood. We then quantified the activity level and wall-following tendency of callow workers on ten successive trials to test the prediction that larvae reared under a high brood-to-worker ratio should show greater behavioral variations. We found that manipulation of the brood-to-worker ratio influenced the duration of development and the size of individuals at emergence. We detected no influence of early social context on the level of between- or within individual variation measured for individual activity level or on wall-following behavior. Our study suggests that behavioral traits may be more canalized than morphological traits.

The impact of temperature and light/dark cycle on morphological traits of Platytrombidium fasciatum was examined in larvae obtained from field-collected females. The eggs laid by 65 females at laboratory conditions were assigned to four experimental groups. Varied thermal conditions affected the values of nine out of 46 (nonparametric MANOVA) and 26 out of 37 (LDA) morphometric traits in larvae. As many as six quantitative traits differed significantly irrespective of the method (MANOVA, LDA) applied. The analysis of the metric traits within the dorsal sclerites revealed that the lower mean temperature over the period of egg incubation, translated into longer duration of development, was associated with an increase in distance between the bases of 3rd pair of non-sensillary setae on scutum at the decrease in distance between the bases of 2nd pair of non-sensillary setae as well as in distance between the level of sensilla and the posterior edge of the sclerite. In the case of 40 measurable traits in larvae of P. fasciatum, the variability going beyond the hitherto knowledge on the species was observed.

Host plants play an important role in affecting insect development and reproduction. Understanding the host plant preferences is important for pest control. Thrips flavus Schrank (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is a worldwide phytophagous pest in Palearctic Asian and European countries. We used a life table analysis to study the development duration, population parameters, and population growth of T. flavus on five plant species, including Solanum melongena (Solanaceae), Capsicum annuum (Solanaceae), Glycine max (Leguminosae), Brassica rapa var. glabra (Cruciferae), and Cucumis sativus (Cucurbitaceae). The results showed that T. flavus can survive and reproduce on Cu. sativus and G. max, which were two potentially suitable host plants. T. flavus preferred to oviposit on Cu. sativus with a shorter duration of development (17.8 days) at 25 °C. Therefore, the host plant was an important factor influencing the development and fecundity of T. flavus populations. These results will improve our understanding of the population dynamics of T. flavus and facilitate the development of more scientific and efficient measures to control thrips.

Abstract The rapid development of the city has resulted in the development of development in each city getting more massive with a relatively fast duration of development. This has very significant impacts on the livelihoods of the people. One of the impacts is flooding that occurs due to wrong land use and improper drainage makers. Drainage as a diversion system for excess water is needed to divert water that falls into the road body and tackle inundation that occurs when it rains. This is intended to reduce the risk of accidents due to slipping of tires due to water. The planning of the road surface drainage system in the case of the Budiman Kota Tembilahan road needs important attention in order to avoid flooding or accidents. In this study, an analysis of drainage planning was carried out with a simulation using hecras 4.0 software to simulate the planned drainage conditions on Jalan Budiman, Tembilahan city. After collecting data on the length of the drainage channel on Jalan Budiman, Tembilahan city and Catchment for the residential area on Jalan Budiman, Tembilahan city, as well as rainfall data for the last 10 years, the planned discharge and drainage for the drainage of Jalan Budiman, Tembilahan city are Qrencana = 0,141 m3/dt  dan Qsaluran = 0,264 m3/dt dimana Qs > Qr with a rectangular cross section. Then the calculation simulation can be done using HEC-RAS 4.0 software. The results of the analysis of the drainage planning of Tembilahan city roads state that the planned drainage using hecras simulations based on manual calculations is able to accommodate discharge and no runoff.   Keywords: Hec ras 4.0, discharge  , simulation Abstrak Pesatnya perkembangan kota mengakibatkan perkembangan pembangunan pada tiap – tiap kota semakin masif dengan durasi perkembangan yang relatif cepat. Hal tersebut memiliki dampak – dampak yang sangat signifikan bagi hajat hidup warga. Salah satu dampaknya ialah banjir yg terjadi diakibatkan tata guna lahan yang salah dan pembuat drainase yang tidak tepat. It is relevant for a developer of hardware and software systems to assess the duration of development in advance and determine the main factors influencing on its success. Bulk production or bulk production with little changes can be assessed based on the experience. However, when making preliminary assessment, some factors that had not a great effect before may not be considered. The article describes an approach to calculate the duration of hardware and software system development based on analogues, statistics and factors effecting the production. At the same time, it should be noted this method provides only a preliminary assessment and its usage requires additional s.

Studies in the Crimea have shown that both on the southern coast and in the central foothill region, an adventive pest of plants of the genus Buxus - the boxwood fireweed (Cydalima perspectalis), develops in three generations. Caterpillars of the second - third instars hibernate; their emergence from diapause occurs in early April. The timing and duration of development of each of the three generations of the boxwood firefighter in the conditions of the Crimea were determined, the lifespan of the imago was determined, averaging about two weeks, with some individuals living for more than 20 days. The sex index in adults varies in different generations, depending on the living conditions. Thus, in the central foothill region in the first generation, the ratio of females and males reaches 2: 1, and in the second generation, both the proportion of males and melanistic individuals increases in comparison with typically colored butterflies. In each of the three generations, males emerged from pupae 3-5 days earlier than females. The fertility of melanistic females is higher than that of the typically colored. A spring-summer diapause was observed in caterpillars of II-III instars in the overwintered, first and second generations.
