An analytic distorted wave approximation (ADWA) has been developed for use in analyses of intermediate energy inelastic proton scattering from nuclei. Applications are made to analyse 402 and 800 MeV data from the isoscalar and isovector 1 + and 2+ states in 12C and to the 800 MeV data from the excitation of the 2-(888 MeV) state in 160. Comparisons of predictions made using different model two-nucleon t matrices and different models of nuclear structure are given.

Distorted wave approximation analyses of the inelastic scattering of 495 MeV protons from 24Mg and 28Si are used to compare 2 + transition densities that were obtained from a standard shell model, deformed potential models and an SU(3) model of the low excitation spectroscopy of these nuclei. Analysing power predictions do not reproduce the data adequately, and the discrepancies indicate a deficiency in the prescription for the transition mechanism.

Data from the excitation of the 1335, 1835, 1920 and 1940 MeV states in 12C by the inelastic scattering of protons have been analysed using a fully microscopic distorted wave approximation to determine optimal assignments from amongst the current and ambiguous J π; T values of each state involved. While not conclusive, the present analysis suggests the assignments of 4-1; 0, 2-2; 0, 4-2; 0 and 22-2; 1 respectively.

Distorted wave approximation analyses of 135 MeV inelastic proton scattering to high spin (4 - and 6-) unnatural parity states in 24Mg and 28Si have been made to test the character of an effective two-nucleon interaction, assuming a transition spectroscopy of particle-hole excitation from a projected Hartree-Fock intrinsic ground state.
