Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a functional disorder characterized by a set of gastrointestinal symptoms often associated with extra-digestive symptoms with unknown organic basis. It is a prototypic functional bowel disorder in terms of its heterogeneous nature with multifactor pathogenesis. Invariably it is co-morbid with psychiatric disorders. This study was done to determine the frequency and types of psychiatric disorders with irritable bowel syndrome and to find out association of socio-demographic and relevant variables. It was cross-sectional study carried out in the Department of Gastroenterology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) from January 2014 to December 2014. Total 250 sample were included by convenient sampling technique in this study diagnosed as IBS. Diagnosis was done according to Rome III criteria and SCID-CV was used for psychiatric assessment. Respondents were above 18 years of age of either sex. Data was analyzed using SPSS 20. Results showed 86.4% patients have psychiatric disorders. The most common disorder was generalized anxiety disorder (44.9%) followed by major depressive disorder (37.5%). Maximum (35.2%) were IBS-D type followed by 32.8% IBS-C type and 32% IBS-M type. So, it is seen that significant proportion of psychiatric disorders was found in patients with irritable bowel syndrome. Among them, generalized anxiety disorder was leading psychiatric disorder. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most common functional gastrointestinal disorder commonly associated with psychosomatic illness Eighty six patients of IBS who met the clinical Rome-II criteria were enrolled in this prospective study. Necessary laboratory investigations were done to exclude organic diseases. All patients were subjected to psychiatric assessment by clinical psychiatrist using DSM-IV criteria. 96.5% of the studied patients actually had different psychiatric illness. Among them generalized anxiety disorder (24.4%), depressive illness (27.8%), somatoform disorder (12.7%) and hypochondriasis (10.4%) were the predominant abnormalities. New onset of IBS patients exhibited higher prevalence of generalized anxiety disorder (42.8%) in comparison to longer duration of illness. Depressive illness (44.4%) was substantially higher in constipation-predominant IBS than other forms.   doi: 10.3329/taj.v18i1.3296 TAJ 2005; 18(1): 10-13

AbstractBackground:The parental bonding is influenced by two dimensions: care and control or protection over the child of both parents. The lack of care during childhood may make the individual more susceptible to the onset of psychiatric disorders when adult. These psychiatric disorders when present during pregnancy may have a negative impact on the health of pregnant women and children. The aim of this study was to assess the association between generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in pregnant adolescents and the perception of parental bonding. Methods:This is a cross-sectional study with 871 pregnant women under the age of 19, receiving prenatal care in 47 Basic Health Units in the one city, Brazil. The generalized anxiety disorder was measured using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) and the perception of parental bonding in childhood using the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI).Results:The prevalence of GAD was 8.5%. Among all the parental bonding dimensions, only a perceived lack of maternal care under 16 years was associated with GAD.Conclusions:The results showed that only the perception of maternal bonding was associated with later GAD. It suggests that an adequate maternal bond is an essential component of psychological health.
