Abstract A new genus--Ornitholithus--is erected from bird eggs found in the Eocene of Provence, France. Five species are described within the genus. These species belong to two different stratigraphic levels--a narrow zone of Thanetian fluvio-lacustrine deposits containing O. biroi separated by a hiatus from the overlying upper Thanetian-upper Sparnacian fluvio-lacustrine beds with O. arcuatus, O. mammosus, O. mammillatus, and O. mammeatus. The structure of sauropsid egg shells is reviewed.
