In recent years there has been increased discussion of the subjective, emotional and sociological factors influencing student choice of university. However, there is a dearth of information exploring what constitutes these feelings. This exploratory paper uses the conceptual model of the servicescape to provide insight into the emotional factors driving student choice. In-depth interviews with prospective students revealed that first impressions really do count. Students are deterred by poor physical environments and excited by enthusiastic staff and students. Most significantly, the study revealed the necessity of a restorative servicescape to provide both a sense of escape and feeling of belonging. This paper contributes to broadening the application of the servicescape model and to a greater understanding of the impact of the environment on prospective students, and creates an opportunity to inform policy by providing university marketing decision makers with a better understanding of what constitutes the university environment and what makes it appealing to prospective students.

Participation in recreation during college has been shown to positively impact student development; however, little to no research exists examining leisure activities within a for-credit classroom. The purpose of the study was to examine the role for-credit leisure education classes (leisure skill classes) have on student development at the university level. Focus groups were conducted with students currently enrolled in seven leisure skill classes. Two major themes emerged, motivation/benefits of leisure skill class enrollment and contributions to student development. Students were motivated to participate in the classes due to numerous benefits the class offered (i.e., able to try something new, reduced cost, health benefits, socialization, needing credit). In addition, the classes contributed to development by giving them the opportunity to become well-rounded students and future professionals. Practitioners should consider the multitude of benefits for-credit leisure skill classes can offer in a college setting.

Recent research shows that ‘environmental denial’ (the denial of anthropogenic impact on the natural world) plays an important role in environmental education. The difficulty in changing our detrimental habits stems from the fact that identities in our societies are bound up with consumerist practices. Because we cannot simply give up practices that shape our identity, environmental education has to fi nd ways of substituting unhealthy habits with environmentally acceptable ones. One method of achieving this is through experiential education based on experiences with the natural world and their importance for identity formation. The paper presents a case study involving experiential education in environmental ethics, implemented at the university level. Findings show that the implementation of experiential education technique (fi eld trip) yielded positive results in connection with students’ overcoming of environmental denial and consequential change of their environmental outlook.

Abstract Contemporary psychologist Didier Anzieu249 speaks of five phases of the process of creation: creative emotion, gaining consciousness, transposition, elaboration, and exposure. Each of the five phases has a correspondent in the stages of development of visual-plastic educational activities, and the role of the teacher is essential in each of them. Starting from the five phases, we propose an approach pattern to the creative process, adapted and developed during the years of experience in pre-university educational environment, and refined throughout the research activity carried out in the university environment.

The article discusses the significance of responsibility in providing safety of the environment surrounding the person. The problem is caused by the contradiction between the human need for security and impossibility in many cases to satisfy it because of inadequate fulfilment of the duties by employees. The purpose of the article is to outline the ways of solving this contradiction by pedagogical means. The methodological basis of the research is systematic, activity-based, and subject-subject approaches. The author reveals the essential features of responsible behavior and prerequisites for the formation of a responsible person: macro-level (organization of public life); family and other micro-communities; educational institutions. Importance of effort consolidation of all subjects of pedagogical influence for solving urgent educational problems is noted. The role of certain principles of education in the formation of a responsible person in the past and at the present stage is shown. Particular attention is paid to the role of higher education in the formation of responsibility, since it is in the university environment where students develop such patterns of behavior that afterwards may be used in public and everyday life, and in their profession. This approach makes a purely pedagogical issue socially important.
