Abstract This qualitative study sought to explore the role of online religious learning in alleviating distress and enhancing wellbeing in later life. Twenty-six religious Jewish individuals aged 70–96 were personally trained in their homes to use an experimental spiritual learning website. Their experiences were documented for six months via interviews, media ethnographies, and monthly follow-ups. Analysis identified the participants’ initial ambivalent attitudes towards online religious learning, which extended the discussion of cultural barriers to the integration of digital technologies for religious observance and the maintenance of communal boundaries. However, this research group’s experience highlighted the intellectual, social, and emotional benefits garnered by participation in online religious learning in later life. The findings indicate that this informal educational channel may supplement religious praxis and fill the lives of older religious adults with positive rewards and, thereby, improve their psychological and social wellbeing.

Pembelajaran dilaksanakan melalui pemberian tugas melalui panduan belajar anak selama satu minggu yang dikirimkan melalui media aplikasi Whatsapp Group orangtua siswa. This research was motivated by the existence of a new policy on the implementation of Learning from Home (BDR) during the COVID-19 pandemic which prioritized the safety and health of students and all levels of educators at early childhood institutions. This condition has implications for such institutions, especially in early childhood spiritual education which should also be conducted online. This is a case study which aims to explore the online spiritual education for preschool children that covers the learning process and the teacher's assessment of learning during the pandemic. Qualitative approach was used to gather the information through interviews to teachers and headmasters and documentation on the implementation of children's online spiritual learning at TK Omah Dolanan Yogyakarta. The results show that the implementation of early childhood spiritual learning in this institution is in accordance with the 2013 curriculum during the online learning system. Learning is carried out through giving assignments in the form of broncasthing or children's study guides for one week which are sent through the WhastApp Group application media. The spiritual learning material is adjusted to the religion of each child. Parent guide children in spiritual activities then document their learning outcomes in the form of videos and pictures. The evaluation is not effective in the learning process, namely the lack of teacher capacity and the  inadequacy in monitoring and guiding children during the spiritual learning process. Some children were not participating maximally in the learning process, so this resulted in a decrease in the assessment of spiritual learning in this early childhood institutions.

Abstract Religious faith plays a crucial role in the life of people in penal custody. Research generally focuses on the impact of religion on inmates’ rehabilitation. Studies on volunteers in prison receive scholarly attention but largely in regard to how they affect inmates. This study focuses on Christian visitors in prison and their motives, goals, and experiences. The study evaluates the responses of 152 Christian volunteer visitors around prisons in Hong Kong. The study shows that majority of them are at a time of their life when they are most strongly occupied by work and familial obligations and yet they take time off to visit people in prison. It offers evidence how visits to those in prison contribute to visitors’ own spiritual learning and to a changed view of those in prison. The findings of the study indicate that volunteers see themselves as active agents who help, teach, and transform.

AbstractThis article discusses the purpose, content and reception of the healing and spirit-possession methods of Honda Chikaatsu 本田親徳 (1822–1890) and his followers. It investigates what the methods were intended for, how they were practiced, and how they were received by the government, the common people and the elite. These methods were for all intents and purposes meant to benefit and glorify the new Imperial Japan under the Meiji government that Honda venerated and adored. Although the modernizing Meiji government outlawed such magico-religious practices, spirit-possession methods—and healing methods in particular—were in high demand among the faithful at shrines such as those where Honda’s disciples served as priests. At the same time, some very prominent individuals were intrigued by Honda’s spirit-possession methods and the strategic benefits they promised.

Javanese Islamic Literature was connected to Islamic mysticism and written in poem to express delicate and sophisticated doctrines. Poem is deemed to be able to go beyond literal meaning for it expresses notion through figurative languages. Suluk Wujil is a good example of such early Javanese Islamic literary work that features spiritual quest and teaching. Suluk Wujil tells about Wujil, a convert who wanted to reach the essence of the ultimate Truth. Wujil is symbolic figure carrying an important sufistic teaching as well as the revealing socio-religious discourse in the early development of Islam in Java. This article is aimed to reveal the content of Suluk Wujil using three steps of semiotic reading, i,e, narrative schema, primary sign discovery and syntagmatic as well as paradigmatic analysis. The paper shows, firstly, that narrative scheme of Suluk Wujils is proceeded by a complaint of Wujil who failed to get into The Ultimate Truth after ten years of spiritual learning in Bonang. Ratu Wahdat or Sunan Bonang taught him the way to get spiritual enlightenment along with endorsing spiritual enlightenment of Seh Malaya (Sunan Kalijaga). Secondly, the primary sign of the Wujil Suluk is the phrase "Arriving in Mecca", in the last part of the text. The phrase affirms the spiritual characteristic of Suluk Wujil, with concern to a spiritual journey to very truth of Islamic spirituality. Thirdly, the paradigmatic analysis shows that there are various signs parallel and oppositional in the same time. The combination of signs forms a synthesis which leads to a deeper understanding of the significance of the signs. The syntagmatic analysis leads to an understanding of oppositional, but complementary signs.
