As blasting technology starts to be used in a wide range of areas, blast loading has led to an increasing number of geological disasters such as slope deformation, collapses, and soil slippage. Slopes with weak interlayers are more likely to be deformed and damaged under the influence of blast loading. It is of great importance to study the evolution for the deformation of slopes with weak interlayers during blasting excavation. This study constructed a slope model with a weak interlayer to investigate the influence of different factors of blasting, including explosive charge, blast radius, blast origin, and multi-hole blasting, on the internal dynamic response. The deformation mechanism of slopes with weak interlayers under the influence of blast loading was analyzed. Test results show that each layer of the model had a different displacement response (uncoordinated dynamic response) to blasting with various factors. Explosive energy and the pattern of dynamic response of each layer varied depending on different settings of blasting factors such as explosive charge, blast radius, blast origin, and detonation initiation method. When the explosive energy produced under the influence of various factors was small, the change in the uncoordinated dynamic response between layers was significant, and the change gradually became less significant as the explosive energy increased. Therefore, this study has proposed the concept of critical explosive energy, and it is speculated that when the explosive energy produced with various factors is less than critical explosive energy, the dynamic response is mainly affected by the internal structure of the slope (property difference induced geologic layers). In other words, the uncoordinated motion of material’s particles in each layer is caused by different limitations and the degree of movement of the particles, which leads to the uncoordinated dynamic response and uncoordinated deformation of each layer. If the explosive energy is greater than the critical value, the dynamic response of each layer is mainly affected by the explosive energy. The differences in the internal structure of the slope are negligible, and the incoordination of dynamic responses between layers gradually weakens and tends to synchronize.

The vibration induced by blasting excavation of the subway tunnel in complex urban environments may cause harmful effects on adjacent buildings. Investigating the dynamic response of adjacent buildings is a key issue to predict and control blasting hazards. In this paper, the blasting excavation of the subway tunnel right below a building was selected as a case study, and the blast vibrations in the field were monitored. The Hilbert–Huang Transform (HHT) model was used to extract and analyze the time-frequency characteristic parameters of blasting dynamic response signals. By substituting intrinsic mode functions (IMF) component frequency and instantaneous energy for main frequency and blasting total input energy, respectively, the characteristics of time-instantaneous frequency-instantaneous energy of buildings under blasting seismic load were analyzed, and the concept of effective duration of vibration was proposed.

Blasting excavation is extensively used in tunnel construction, and the adverse effect of ground vibration induced by blasting on surrounding structures and inhabitants is a critical problem. This study aims to investigate the tunnel hollow effect on triaxial peak particle velocities (PPV) and dominant frequencies induced by electronic detonator. Field experiments were conducted in a shallow tunnel construction site and the ground vibration waveforms were recorded. Variational mode decomposition (VMD) was applied to denoise and correct the zero-drift phenomenon, and the proposed method of selecting the optimal parameter was verified. A series of statistical analyses and tests were performed to evaluate the differences of peak particle velocity and dominant frequency among various monitoring points. The results showed that the hollow effect on Z-axis PPV is significant, and triaxial PPV is also affected when the horizontal distance exceeds 30 m. The hollow effect on dominant frequency could not be identified since the hollow of tunnel is a free face, and the dominant frequency of reflected wave remains unchanged. An augmented factor of 1.229 is determined carefully as the hollow effect factor on PPV. Therefore, blasting vibration induced by electronic detonator of the excavated zone should be attached with greater importance, and hollow effect on PPV should be considered in the blasting design of tunnel excavation.

In situ stress is one of the most important factors affecting rock dynamic fractures during blasting excavation of deep rock mass that generally is hard rock. In this research, crater blasting experiments on hard rock under different uniaxial static stresses were conducted to investigate the initiation and propagation process of crack networks that were induced by coupled dynamic and static loads. Furthermore, the effects of anisotropic static stress fields on the initiation and propagation of crack networks during hard rock blasting, and the crack network morphological characteristics were analyzed and elucidated. The experimental results showed that the static stress field changed the process of crack network initiation and propagation during hard rock blasting, and then control the crack network morphology. Under uniaxial static stress, the crack network was elliptical with the long axis parallel to the static stress. In addition, the larger the anisotropic static stress is, the more obvious the elliptical morphology of the crack network. Moreover, the static stress lead to the delay of crack formation which indicates that the delay time during millisecond blasting excavation of deep rock mass should be adjusted appropriately according to the in situ stress. A stress-strength ratio (SSR) of 0.15 is the threshold value where static stress may have a significant effect on the initiation and propagation of a crack network. Meanwhile, the strain field prior to crack initiation during rock blasting controlled the morphological characteristics of the crack network. Finally, the mechanism of static stress affecting propagation and morphology of crack network was revealed theoretically.

Abstract The escape of toxic and harmful gases is a common disaster effect in tunnel engineering. Frequent drilling and blasting excavation disturbances under high in-situ stress environment will inevitably lead to cumulative damage effect on surrounding rock, which will increase the permeability coefficient of surrounding rock, increase the risk of toxic and harmful gas escape, and seriously endanger construction safety. In this paper, based on real-time monitoring data of harmful gases during blasting and excavation of Yuelongmen Tunnel on Chengdu-Lanzhou Railway, this study summarized laws and distribution characteristics of harmful gas escape intensified by the blasting excavation, and the effectiveness of shotcreting and grouting for water blocking to inhibit gas escape is verified. Then, taking water-containing and gas-containing voids as carriers, considering the influence of different in-situ stress, explosion load and void parameters (including void pressure, void diameter and distance between void and tunnel), to carry out research on the escape mechanism of water-soluble (H 2 S) and insoluble (CH 4 ) toxic and harmful gases under the coupling effect of stress-seepage-damage. The relationship between the amount of harmful gas escaped and the damage degree of the surrounding rock of the tunnel is analyzed, and the functional relationship between it and the in-situ stress, explosion load and cave parameters is established. The results further demonstrate that the amount of escaped harmful gases, such as methane and H 2 S is closely related to lithology of surrounding rock, occurrence conditions of the deep rock mass, development degree of structural fractures and void parameters. The damage of surrounding rock caused by dynamic disturbance during blasting excavation is the main reason of aggravating harmful gas escape. The research results can provide a theoretical reference for preventing harmful gas from escaping in the similar engineering construction.

Tunnel blast-induced vibration probably causes damage to the rock mass surrounding the tunnel surface and also to the rock mass of the slope at the tunnel entrance. It is important to simultaneously monitor the vibration on the tunnel surface and on the tunnel entrance slope face, especially when the blasting work face is close to tunnel entrance. During blasting excavation of the traffic tunnel at Baihetan hydropower station, vibration monitors were installed both on the tunnel surface and on the tunnel entrance slope face. Based on the monitoring data, a comparative study is conducted on the peak particle velocity (PPV) and frequency characteristics of the vibrations at these two locations. A three-dimensional FEM simulation of the tunnel blast is then performed to verify the field test results. The field monitoring and the numerical simulation show that there is significant difference between the vibration on the tunnel surface and that on the tunnel entrance slope face. The vibration on the tunnel surface has greater PPV and faster attenuation, while the tunnel entrance slope face has higher frequency and faster reduction rate in the center frequency. These differences are attributed to the different wave types and wave propagation paths. The tunnel surface is mainly surface waves transmitted through the damaged rock mass around the tunnel profile, while the tunnel entrance slope face originates mainly from the body waves transmitted via the undamaged rock mass inside the mountain. The comparisons of the monitored vibrations with the velocity limits specified in the Chinese standard show that the most dangerous vibration that may exceed the limit occurs on the tunnel surface. Therefore, the maximum charge weight used in the tunnel blast is determined by the vibration on the tunnel surface. Under different control standards, the allowable maximum charge weight per delay is further discussed.

To recommend the excavation procedures and design parameters for underground powerhouses, excavation procedures of fifty-one underground powerhouses in China were summarized and analyzed based on in situ stress conditions. Firstly, the complex stress environment in China was introduced and fifty-one underground powerhouses with their engineering scale, size, lithology, rock classification and in situ stress level were listed in detail. Subsequently, to evaluate the influence of in situ stress levels on excavation procedure design, the correlation between excavation procedures and in situ stress level in three main excavation zones were analyzed accordingly. Moreover, to provide the excavation design recommendations, the strength–stress ratio (SSR) was promoted to analyze and recommend the design parameters, and the blasting excavation design based on the stress transient unloading control was also supplemented. The results show that excavation procedures have different priorities under different in situ stress levels, and the design parameters show an obvious relationship with in situ stress levels. Moreover, the excavation procedure parameters are suggested to adjust accordingly under different SSR. The discussion of influencing factors and specification ensures its rationality and accuracy. It is believed that the summary and recommendations can provide a good reference for excavation procedure optimization of underground powerhouse under high in situ stress.
