A laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique was used to evaluate the filler content in particulate epoxy–copper composites. A potential application for a direct and fast measurement of the filler in composites through the LIBS results is suggested using calibrated samples. The methodology used in this work makes possible the incorporation of LIBS as a quantitative technique for the study of particle metal-filled epoxy composites, providing a method to obtain a direct estimation of the filler volume fraction.

Pesticide residues in food are a threat to consumption. However, detecting residues quickly and directly on the sample is a complex job. In this work, the potential application of the Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) technique for the rapid measurement of pesticide residues (imidacloprid, cypermethrin and chlorpyrifos) in chard leaves is explored by registering the chlorine emission line (725.66 nm). Significant differences can be observed with respect to the control sample, evidencing the applicability of this technique as a potential tool for the study of pesticide residues in food matrices.

IR multiple-photon decomposition of 1,1,1-trifluoroacetone has been achieved in bulk by irradiating molecules with 970.55 cm−1 laser radiation. In collisional regime the onset of laser induced breakdown has been observed. Primary fragmentation and subsequent ion and radical secondary reactions have been monitored detecting the spontaneous luminescence with a gateable Optical Multichannel Analyzer.

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a powerful technique for quantitative diagnostics of gases. The spatial resolution of LIBS, however, is limited by the volume of plasma. Here femtosecond-nanosecond dual-pulsed LIBS was demonstrated. Using this method, the breakdown threshold was reduced by 80%, and decay of continuous radiation was shortened. In addition, the volume of the plasma was shrunk by 85% and hence, the spatial resolution of LIBS was significantly improved.

Summary1. Caseinolytic and fibrinolytic systems for assay of plasmin in fibrinolytic agents are described which are based upon the determinations of AE/min during the linear portion of the casein-plasmin and fibrin-plasmin reaction curves respectively. A " caseinolytic-rate " unit and “fibrinolytic-rate " unit of ÄE/min × 103 during the linear portion of the respective curves are proposed.2. Data are presented indicating that a reliably linear relationship exists between plasmin concentration and these caseinolytic - and fibrinolytic-rate units.3. Data comparing results obtained with the proposed assay techniques and previously-used casein and fibrinolytic techniques are presented.4. Formulae by which caseinolytic-rate and fibrinolytic-rate units can be roughly converted into Remmert-Cohen type plasmin units are offered.5. The theoretical and practical problems which have influenced development of assays for fibrinolytic components are discussed.6. The advantages of the plasmin “rate unit” techniques vis a vis existing assays are delineated.7. The potential application of the techniques to measurements other than the plasmin content of fibrinolytic agents is discussed.
