Significance The currently anonymous whistleblower is expected to testify to Congress about the complaint, which alleges that Trump abused his office to get Ukraine to investigate political rival and 2020 Democratic presidential contender Joe Biden, the former US vice president. Trump denies there was any wrongdoing or quid pro quo. Impacts Depending on how the impeachment process goes, the Democrats and Republicans could both benefit. The Democrats will investigate other administration and cabinet officials as part of the probe. Investigating other officials could prolong the impeachment story, perhaps beyond the end of any presidential impeachment. Impeachment in November, heightening partisan divisions, could coincide with a federal government shutdown, exacerbating it. If Trump were removed, Vice President Mike Pence would become president immediately.

Abstract The construction of a wall along the US/Mexico border was one of the main political platforms upon which the 2016 US presidential election campaign was fought. Ahead of the upcoming 2020 US presidential election, and with the border wall still not yet built or funded, this article uses the authorisation component of Van Leeuwen’s (2007) framework for the discourse of legitimation to show how President Donald J. Trump has sought legitimacy for the construction of the border wall. Data is taken from Trump’s @realDonaldTrump Twitter postings between October 18th, 2018 and February 3rd, 2019, a period inclusive of the longest federal government shutdown in US history. We show how Trump’s Twitter language is frequently accompanied by evidence-less attacks on sources of rival opinion or information, while the president tends to reaffirm himself as the exclusive source of credible and truthful information.

Scientists say the shutdown is a message that the government considers science nonessential.

The longest federal government shutdown has just ended, but others are likely when deep policy disagreements arise

Furloughs refer to placing employees on a temporary leave with no pay for the period of the leave. The current study draws from conservation of resources (COR) theory to examine how furloughs affect employees’ experiences of burnout, work–family conflict, and life satisfaction. Results gathered from 212 individuals show that being furloughed during the 2013 U.S. federal government shutdown was associated with perceived personal resource loss, which was related to decreased life satisfaction and increased work–family conflict and physical, cognitive, and emotional burnout 5 weeks after the shutdown ended. The relationships between furlough status and all outcomes were fully mediated by perceived resource loss. Our findings show that furloughs can and do negatively affect employees and that these effects last long after the furlough has ended.
