In this paper, we formulate and prove a duality for cohomology of curves over perfect fields of positive characteristic with coefficients in Néron models of abelian varieties. This is a global function field version of the author’s previous work on local duality and Grothendieck’s duality conjecture. It generalizes the perfectness of the Cassels–Tate pairing in the finite base field case. The proof uses the local duality mentioned above, Artin–Milne’s global finite flat duality, the nondegeneracy of the height pairing and finiteness of crystalline cohomology. All these ingredients are organized under the formalism of the rational étale site developed earlier.

Let K be a function field over a perfect constant field of positive characteristic p, and L the compositum of n (degree p) Artin–Schreier extensions of K. Then much of the behavior of the degree pn extension L/K is determined by the behavior of the degree p intermediate extensions M/K. For example, we prove that a place of K totally ramifies/is inert/splits completely in L if and only if it totally ramifies/is inert/splits completely in every M. Examples are provided to show that all possible decompositions are in fact possible; in particular, a place can be inert in a non-cyclic Galois function field extension, which is impossible in the case of a number field. Moreover, we give an explicit closed form description of all the different exponents in L/K in terms of those in all the M/K. Results of a similar nature are given for the genus, the regulator, the ideal class number and the divisor class number. In addition, for the case n = 2, we provide an explicit description of the ramification group filtration of L/K.

We formulate and prove an analogue of the non-commutative Iwasawa Main Conjecture for [Formula: see text]-adic representations of the Galois group of a function field of characteristic [Formula: see text]. We also prove a functional equation for the resulting non-commutative [Formula: see text]-functions. As corollaries, we obtain non-commutative generalizations of the main conjecture for Picard-[Formula: see text]-motives of Greither and Popescu and a main conjecture for abelian varieties over function fields in precise analogy to the [Formula: see text] main conjecture of Coates, Fukaya, Kato, Sujatha and Venjakob.
