This chapter provides a summary of the landmark study entitled “Advanced Heart Failure Treated with Continuous-Flow Left Ventricular Assist Device.” This study and this chapter explores how a second-generation continuous-flow left ventricular assist device compares with a first generation pulsatile-flow device with regard to the clinical endpoints of survival, freedom from stroke, and freedom from device exchange. Starting with this comparison, this chapter describes the study basics, including funding, study location, who was studied, patient numbers, study design, study intervention, follow-up, endpoints, results, criticisms, and limitations. The chapter briefly reviews other relevant studies and related topics while discussing implications. It concludes with a relevant clinical case.
