Relationships among problematic North American stagnicoline snails (Pulmonata: Lymnaeidae) reinvestigated using nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer sequences

The taxonomic relationships among four stagnicoline snail species from North America were reassessed by analysing nucleotide sequences from their nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. Three of the species (Stagnicola catascopium, Stagnicola emarginata, and Stagnicola elodes) are representatives of the subgenus Stagnicola s.str. from the northern U.S.A. and the fourth is a closely related Canadian species (Stagnicola caperata) belonging to the subgenus Hinkleyia. Members of the two subgenera differed considerably in their ITS sequences, demonstrating the usefulness of these sequences for distinguishing species from closely related lymnaeid subgenera. In contrast, ITS sequences for the three members of the subgenus Stagnicola s.str. were very similar, which supports an earlier view that they may not be separate species.

Acrocordiella omanensis sp. nov. is described and illustrated from specimens on dead stem of Juniper sp. collected in Al Jabal al-Akhdar (Green Mountain), Sultanate of Oman. It strongly resembles Acrocordiella occulta, the type of the genus, in its similar asci and ascospore anatomy. It differs from A. occulta in having bell-shaped to cap-like clypeus around the ostiole and larger asci and ascospores. The combined large subunit nuclear ribosomal DNA and internal transcribed spacer sequences support the conclusions based on the morphological data.

Peucedanum huangshanense, a new species discovered in Anhui, China, is illustrated and described. Detailed morphological comparisons have showed that it is similar to P. praeruptorum but differs from the latter by having larger compound umbels (5–14 cm across), rays up to 25, and long-ovoid mericarps with lateral ribs narrowly winged. To explore the phylogenetic position of this species, nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region was sequenced for P. huangshanense and P. praeruptorum collected in different places. The morphological and molecular evidences support the hypothesis that P. huangshanense is a new distinct species.
