Intravascular ultrasound imaging is used to visualize the vessel wall structure, the information of which is not available by contrast angiography, which depicts only a two-dimensional silhouette of the lumen. This chapter outlines the principles and procedures of intravascular ultrasound imaging, the basics of image interpretation, and both common and specific interventional applications of the technique, followed by a discussion of possible future directions.
