After the responding of pigeons had stabilized on a MULT VI VI reinforcement schedule, one of the components was switched to a DRO contingency. The reinforcement frequency associated with the DRO component was either one-half, equal to, or twice as large as the reinforcement frequency during the constant VI component. The resulting changes in response rate extended previous work by Nevin (1968) and provided some contradictory evidence for Hughes' (1971) inverse hypothesis.
