From material collected by R. Le Berre in 1972 and by J. J. Petersen and B. Mondet in 1975, two new species of Mermithidae are described from blackfly larvae, including Simulium damnosum s.l., for the first time in West Africa. These species, Gastromermis philipponi n.sp. and Gastromermis leberrei n.sp. possess a rudimentary excretory gland and the preparasitic larvae of the former contain a characteristic caudal appendage which is lost during penetration into the simuliid larvae. Therefore, these two species are the only ones of Gastromermis known to have six longitudinal cords.

The genus Cicadulina was erected in 1926 (Bull. Ent. Res., xvii, p. 43) to hold C. zeae, a new species injurious to maize in Kenya Colony. Thanks to the kindness of Mr. T. J. Naudé, I have since been able to examine specimens of Balchitha mbila, Naudé, which has been recorded as transmitting the virus of streak disease of maize in Natal. This species is undoubtedly congeneric with C. zeae and differs from typical Balclutha species in the shape of the head and pronotum, and in the venation of the tegmina. It should, therefore, be known in future as Cicadulina mbila, Naudé.

The genus Capicua Navás, 1921, synonymised with Geyria Esben-Petersen, 1920 by Stange (2004), is reinstated and redescribed. The unique specimen of Capicua fulvicauda Navás, 1921 kept in the Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris is designated as lectotype. Two new species of antlions from West Africa are described and tentatively included in Capicua pending more material of the type species C. fulvicauda to verify this placement. Holotypes and paratypes are deposited in the collection of CIRAD/CBGP in Montpellier, France.
