Novelist and short story writer Jayne Anne Phillips was born in Buckhannon, West Virginia. She began writing at the age of nine, inventing wild adventure stories about herself and her friends, before turning to poetry in her teens at the encouragement of her teachers. She earned a BA in 1974 from West Virginia University and an MA in 1978 from the University of Iowa, where she studied at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, publishing two collections of short stories while still a graduate student.
