Additions and alterations to the inventory of about 26 000 plant taxa in southern Africa are reported for the period from February 1990 to February 1991. In this period a total of 1 080 alterations have been recorded. These changes result from the continual surveying of taxonomic literature received by the library of the National Botanical Institute.

The genera  Nesaea Commers. ex H.B.K. and  Ammannia L. in southern Africa, which comprises Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Swaziland and Lesotho, were revised. In  Nesaea, 27 species (seven new), four varieties and one new form were recognized.  Ammannia was revised using the DECORANA computer program, and four species were recognized. Keys to the taxa are presented, as well as synonymy (restricted to the region), diagnoses and descriptions o f new taxa, and notes on distribution, taxonomy and nomenclature. The following taxa are new:  Nesaea alata Immelman,  N. angustifolia Immelman.  N. cymosa Immelman,  N. minima Immelman.  N. sagittifolia (Sond.) Koehne var.  ericiformis Koehne forma swaziensis Immelman.  N. saluta Immelman, N. wardii Immelman and  N. zambatidis Immelman.

Four new taxa of ferns are described and illustrated from southern Africa:  Ophioglossum convexum J.E. Burrows, Mohria caffrorum (L.) Desv. var. ferruginea J.E. S.M. Burrows,  Marsilea farinosa Launert subsp. arrecta J.E. Burrows and Asplenium sebungweense J.E. Burrows. The combination of Grammitis rigescens (Bory ex Willd.) J.E. Burrows is made. Ophioglossum thomasii Clausen,  O. rube Hum Welw. ex A. Braun.  Vinana ensiformis Swartz and Asplenium buettneri Hieron. ex Brause are new records for Zimbabwe, while Hymenophyllum splendidum V.d. Bosch and  Asplenium uhligii Hieron. are new records for Malawi and Zimbabwe. Actiniopteris semiflabellata Pichi-Sermolli is recorded from Namibia and Thelypteris oppositiformis (C. Chr.) Ching is recorded from the Transvaal.

Alterations for the year 1986 to the inventory maintained in PRECIS are reported for bryophytes, pteridophytes and monocotyledons, and for a few dicotyledons. For the cryptogams and monocots there are 77 newly described species or infraspecific taxa, 27 names brought back into use, and nine species newly reported for southern Africa, resulting in 113 additions to the total list of species. Five species were removed because they were mistakenly recorded from the area. Seventy-five names have gone into synonymy, there are 52 new combinations, and there are 35 orthographic corrections, resulting in 237 alterations to the list of species. The total of 355 additions, deletions and alterations represents about 5% of the total species and infraspecific taxa for the cryptogams and monocots.

Eriosema squarrosum (Thunb.) Walp. has traditionally been the dumping ground for all densely pubescent Eriosema species in southern Africa. This study clarifies the identity of E. squarrosum; recognizes three new taxa: E. luteopetalum C. H. Stirton, E. rossii C. H. Stirton and E. umtamvunense C. H. Stirton; effects the combinations  E. latifolium (Benth. ex Harv.) C. H. Stirton and . acuminatum (Eckl. Zeyh.) C. H. Stirton; and reinstates  E. dregei E. Mey. The species E. preptum C. H. Stirton, described earlier, also belongs to this complex. Rhynchosia barbertonensis C. H. Stirton is given as a new name for E. rogersii Schinz.

It is proposed that the genus Stiptopodius Harold, 1871 should be subdivided into two species groups based on the shape of the lateral edge of the pronotum. Three new species are described from southern Africa: Stiptopodius peringueyi Daniel & Deschodt, new species, Stiptopodius savuti Daniel & Deschodt, new species, and Stiptopodius muellerae Daniel & Deschodt, new species. Stiptopodius savuti new species is the first record of the genus from Botswana. A distribution map for the new taxa is provided. The identification key to the known species of Stiptopodius is updated.

Sisyranthus species are cryptic in both their habit and small size of their flowers making them difficult to find in the wild. The genus was last revised in Flora Capensis (1908) and since then, two new species have been described. Currently it comprises 13 recognised species endemic to southern Africa. Many of these are range-restricted and poorly known. In this contribution the genus is further expanded by describing two novel species. Full descriptions, assessment of conservation status, distribution maps and line drawings of the new taxa are presented.
