A theoretical study of coherent backscattering of light by semi-infinite disordered media is presented. Particular attention is devoted to the case when the light wavelength is larger than the characteristic dimensions of non-uniformities. The study is the further development of the general approach proposed in our previous article15 [J. Opt. Soc. Am.A17, 2029 (2001)]. In the present article in addition to the more rigorous derivation of the expression for the mean backscattering signal the expressions for the fluctuation characteristics (correlation functions) are provided. These expressions can be used for the characterization of multiscattering media by the analysis of the results of backscattering experiments.
