Abstract Electrical and optical properties of Gd2Cl3 and Tb2Cl3 The electrical resistivity of Gd2Cl3 and Tb2Cl3 has been investigated as a function of temperature. Conventional measurements on powder pellets as well as contactless microwave measurements on small single crystals yield a semiconducting behaviour for both componds with energy gaps of about 0.85 eV for Gd2Cl3 and 1.1 eV for Tb2Cl3. The measurements indicate a strong anisotropy of the resistivity. The reflectivity of Tb2Cl3 has been studied in the energy range from 1.1 to 4 eV.
