Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) is a common retinal vascular disorder. However, the exact pathogenesis of CRVO is not known. Various local and systemic factors play a role in the CRVO. CRVO might cause visual morbidity, including macular edema (ME) and neovascularization. ME occurs when fluid and protein deposits accumulate in the macular region. The pathophysiology of ME is complex, with a variety of processes involved in its development. The pathogenesis of CRVO and ME is discussed in the current review.
