Posterior fossa pilocytic astrocytoma presenting with opisthotonus in an infant – A case report

Abstract An 8-year-old boy presented in coma and was found to have a massive posterior fossa hemorrhage on computed tomographic scan. Autopsy disclosed a large cerebellar hematoma within a mixed glioma containing both juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma and oligodendroglioma. It is postulated that the hemorrhage originated from the oligodendroglial component of the tumor.

Mature teratomas (MTs) of the posterior fossa are extremely rare. The authors present a case of a prenatal diagnosis of an MT splitting the brainstem. Representative images as well as the clinical and surgical course are presented. Literature regarding “split brainstem” and MT of the posterior fossa is discussed.

Pilomyxoid astrocytoma (PMA) is an atypical subtype of pilocytic astrocytoma (PA), which presents in children and young adults. The incidence of PMA is low, so there is no standardized treatment protocol for it. Here, we present a 62-year-old woman with recurrent PMA, which is important for the understanding and treatment of the disease.
