Low frequency oscillation has been a major threat in large interconnected power system. These low frequency oscillations curtain the power transfer capability of the line. Power system stabilizer (PSS) helps in diminishing these low frequency oscillations by providing auxiliary control signal to the generator excitation input, thereby restoring stability of the system. In this chapter, the authors have incorporated the concept of oppositional based learning (OBL) along with differential search algorithm (DSA) to solve PSS problem. The proposed technique has been implemented on both single input and dual input PSS, and comparative study has been done to show the supremacy of the proposed techniques. The convergence characteristics as well authenticate the sovereignty of the considered algorithms.

This paper reports a new technique for achieving optimized design for power system stabilizers. In any large scale interconnected systems, disturbances of small magnitudes are very common and low frequency oscillations pose a major problem. Hence small signal stability analysis is very important for analyzing system stability and performance. Power System Stabilizers (PSS) are used in these large interconnected systems for damping out low-frequency oscillations by providing auxiliary control signals to the generator excitation input. In this paper, collective decision optimization (CDO) algorithm, a meta-heuristic approach based on the decision making approach of human beings, has been applied for the optimal design of PSS. PSS parameters are tuned for the objective function, involving eigenvalues and damping ratios of the lightly damped electromechanical modes over a wide range of operating conditions. Also, optimal locations for PSS placement have been derived. Comparative study of the results obtained using CDO with those of grey wolf optimizer (GWO), differential Evolution (DE), Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) and crow search algorithm (CSA) methods, established the robustness of the algorithm in designing PSS under different operating conditions.

This paper presents the result of identification of low-frequency oscillations in 9-bus test model of power system. The identification is achieved by novel technique developed by authors. The technique is described in detail in [1. It is based on treating synchronized phasor measurements. Applicability of identified state matrix for electromechanical oscillations monitoring is demonstrated in the paper.

In this paper, the inter-area low-frequency oscillations are restrained in the interconnected power system by making use of the delay-dependent wide-area dynamic output feedback controller (DOFC). Modal analysis is adopted to obtain the modes of inter-area oscillation to be controlled and the Schur truncation model reduction technique is represented to reduce the order of the power system. The augmented closed-loop system model, where the transmission delay and packet loss of wide-area signals are considered, is established. The sufficient conditions of exponentially mean-square stable are obtained according to Lyapunov’s stability theory. Finally, case studies are carried out on a two-area four-machine power system, where our proposed controller, a conventional controller, and the wide-area damping controller in the existing references are installed, respectively. The simulation results under different external disturbances, packet loss rates, and delays are presented to show the effectiveness and advantages of our proposed controller.
