Non-noble metal catalysts, MnOx–CeO2 mixed oxides, were prepared by a co-precipitation method and used in the direct aerobic oxidation of HMF to FDCA, showing excellent catalystic activity and stability.

The selective oxidation of 5-HMF towards 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) has been achieved with 99% yield in water, using oxygen as the oxidant over CuO·MnO2·CeO2 mixed oxides.

A noble and non-noble metal-confined CNT-based catalytic system was developed for the base-free selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to produce 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid and 2,5-diformylfurane.
