Following the initiative by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) laying the ground for divestment of stocks in corporations supporting occupation (see docs. D1 and D2 in JPS 134), the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches approved a ““minute”” prepared by its Public Issues Committee that addresses the issue of ““economic actions in the service of justice”” in the Israel/Palestine arena and encouraging its member churches to give ““serious consideration”” to divestment. The World Council of Churches is the broadest and most inclusive ecumenical organization, bringing together more than 340 churches, denominations, and church fellowships in over 100 countries and territories, representing some 400 million Christians.
