AbstractProblems associated with nonrandom distributions of active ions in solid state insulator laser materials are discussed. A12O3:Ti3+ and BeAl2O4:Cr3+ crystals are used to show typical examples of some of these problems. In addition some problems of this type observed in new materials with potential for solid state laser applications are discussed.
