Administration of intravenous ethacrynic acid in doses of 1 mg/kg to 8 study patients and 14 "nonstudy" patients–all of whom had congestive heart failure–is reported. No significant changes in serum electrolytes are noted following administration of the drug. In nearly all cases, diureses and clinical improvement within a few hours after administration were noted. The authors suggest that intravenous ethacrynic acid replace mercurials in the treatment of acute congestive heart failure in infants and children.
