On 29-31 May 1988 a French-American Bicentennial Conference was held at the University of Virginia to share in the spirit of commemoration of the Revolution on both sides of the Atlantic. The Tocqueville Review is pleased to publish here a selection of the papers that were presented and discussed among a group of about forty specialists in political science, history, sociology, civilization and literature from France and the United States.
