A new species of Paphiopedilum (Orchidaceae) from Yunnan, China, is described and illustrated based on morphological and molecular evidence. Morphological comparisons indicate that the new species P. notatisepalum is highly similar to P. henryanum, from which it differs by its leaves with large yellow spots, shorter scape, larger flower, ovate, white sepals and petals that are pale purple-red with large purple spots and yellow-white margins. Molecular analyses of combined nuclear and plastid datasets (nrITS and matK) indicate that P. notatisepalum is sister to P. barbigerum, which has a green leaves and pale yellow-green sepals and petals. The morphological and molecular evidence support the hypothesis that P. notatisepalum is a new species.

A new species of Paphiopedilum (Orchidaceae) from Yunnan, China is described and illustrated based on examining morphological and molecular evidence. Morphological comparisons indicate that the new species P. erythroanthum is somewhat similar to P. henryanum, from which it differs by its shorter scape, larger and purple-red flower without purple spots, an obovate dorsal sepal, narrowly oblong petals with recurved apex and a cordate staminode. Molecular analyses of combined nuclear and plastid datasets (ITS and matK) indicate that P. erythroanthum is sister to P. notatisepalum, which has leaves with large yellow spots, a shorter scape, larger flower, white sepals and petals with large purple spots. The morphological and molecular evidence support the hypothesis that P. erythroanthum is a new species.

A new orchid, Calanthe tsiana, is described from southeastern Yunnan, China, based on morphological and DNA evidence. In morphological comparisons, C. tsiana is similar to C. arisanensis, but it differs in having subspatulate petals and falcate-obovate lateral lobes of lip with one ridge on the disk. The phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid DNA (rbcL, matK and trnL-trnF) place C. tsiana with C. arisanensis as sister species and support C. tsiana as a new species.

After examining morphological, molecular and genome-size evidence, we describe and illustrate a new orchid species, Apostasia fogangica, from Guangdong, China. Morphological comparisons indicate that A. fogangica is similar to A. shenzhenica, although the habit, leaves, inflorescences and fruit shapes and sizes differ. Comparison of the genome sizes in Apostasioideae show that A. fogangica is 1C=0.952 pg, which is double the size of A. shenzhenica but close to that of A. wallichii. Molecular analyses from combined nuclear and plastid datasets (ITS, matK and trnL-F) indicate that A. fogangica is sister to A. nipponica plus A. shenzhenica. The morphological, genome-size and molecular evidence support the hypothesis that A. fogangica is a new species.

A new orchid species, Cymbidium yunnanensis (Orchidaceae; Epidendroideae; Cymbidieae), from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated. Based on morphological and molecular analyses, we demonstrate that this new species is similar to C. floribundum, but it differs in its smaller size, leaves 5–15 cm, shorter scape, white flowers with pale purplish markings on its sepals and petals, lip with purplish red blotch, petals narrowly falcate oblong and lip midlobe nearly round with column foot 1.5–2.0 mm long. Phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid (matK, rbcL) DNA sequence data support C. yunnanensis as a new species.

We conducted morphological and molecular analyses to describe a new species of Piperaceae, Piper semi-transparens, which was observed in Hainan, Guangdong and Guangxi Provinces, China. Detailed morphological comparisons between the newly discovered species and other members of Piper indicate that Piper semi-transparens is similar to P. bonii and P. bonii var. macrophyllum, from which it differs in having glabrous leaf blades; stem densely short and unbranched pubescent when young, glabrous when mature; veins 5(–7); stamens 2; stigmas 3, rarely 4; spikes color white when mature; floral bracts glabrous; pericarp white and semi-transparent. Molecular analyses based on the ITS marker of nuclear ribosomal DNA strongly support that P. semi-transparens is a new species in the genus Piper, most closely related to P. bonii and P. bonii var. macrophyllum.

We conducted morphological and molecular analyses to describe a new species of orchid, Dendrobium zhenghuoense, which was observed in northern Fujian Province, China. Detailed morphological comparisons between the newly discovered orchid and other members of Dendrobium indicate that D. zhenghuoense is similar to D. luoi, but it can be distinguished by its shorter peduncle, longer lip, pedicel & ovary, as well as the size of its mentum. Molecular analyses based on the ITS of the nuclear ribosomal and plastid DNA (rbcL, matK-trnK, trnH-psbA and trnL-F) support the claims that D. zhenghuoense is a new species in sect. Dendrobium and is genetically similar to D. luoi and D. leptocladum.

Pleione jinhuana, a new orchid from China, is illustrated and described based on morphological and phylogenetic evidence. Detailed morphological comparisons between the new species and other members of Pleione indicate that P. jinhuana is similar to P. bulbocodioides and P. formosana but differs in having a lip with an erose apical margin and lateral lobes not enfolding the column. To explore the phylogenetic position of this species, nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid DNA (matK exon, trnT-trnL spacer, trnL exon and trnL-trnF spacer) were sequenced for P. jinhuana and individuals of P. formosana collected in Taiwan, Fujian and Zhejiang Provinces. The morphological and molecular evidence support the hypothesis that P. jinhuana is a new species.

Aureoboletus rubellus is described as a new species based on morphological characters and molecular evidence. It is characterized by a brownish red pileal surface, yellowish context, ovoid to nephroid spores, cystidia covered with a pale yellow refractive substance, and a trichodermal pileipellis. Multi-gene analyses based on nrLSU, rpb1 and rpb2 also confirmed it belongs to the genus Aureoboletus. Morphological illustrations and descriptions are provided herein.

Bletilla guizhouensis (Coelogyninae, Epidendroideae, Orchidaceae), a new species from Guizhou, China, is described and illustrated in this study based on the morphological and molecular evidence. Based on the morphological comparison, B. guizhouensis is closely related to B. striata, but differs in having ovate-oblong floral bracts, oblong-elliptic dorsal sepal, lip broadly-obovate, lip mid-lobe subelliptic, and disk with 7 longitudinal lamellae. These features distinguish the new orchid from all other known species of Bletilla. Molecular analysis based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid DNA sequence data indicate that B. guizhouensis is a new species.

A new species of Phalaenopsis, P. pingxiangensis, from Guangxi, China, is described and illustrated. Detailed morphological comparison between the newly discovered orchid and other members of Phalaenopsis s.l. indicate that P. pingxiangensis is similar to P. marriottiana. The new species differs from the latter in its small stature, short inflorescence with two flowers, smaller and pink flower with pale yellow sepals abaxially, orbicular petals, purple-red, flabellate lip and terete column without wings. The molecular analyses of Phalaenopsis indicate that P. pingxiangensis is a distinct species nested in P. subgenus Hygrochilus. In addition, Hygrochilus tsii is transferred to Phalaenopsis.
