A new orchid species, Cymbidium yunnanensis (Orchidaceae; Epidendroideae; Cymbidieae), from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated. Based on morphological and molecular analyses, we demonstrate that this new species is similar to C. floribundum, but it differs in its smaller size, leaves 5–15 cm, shorter scape, white flowers with pale purplish markings on its sepals and petals, lip with purplish red blotch, petals narrowly falcate oblong and lip midlobe nearly round with column foot 1.5–2.0 mm long. Phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid (matK, rbcL) DNA sequence data support C. yunnanensis as a new species.

A new orchid species, Cymbidium codonanthum, from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated based on morphological and molecular analyses. A detailed comparison between the newly discovered orchid and other members of Cymbidium was performed. The new plant what is similar to C. cochleare, but it is characterized by several morphological features that distinguish it from the latter as well as all other known species of Cymbidium. A molecular study based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid matK and rbcL DNA sequence data indicates that C. codonanthum is genetically distinct from other species and a member of Cymbidium section Cyperochis.

A new orchid species, Cymbidium shidianense (Orchidaceae; Cymbidieae), from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated based on morphological and molecular analyses. This new species is similar in morphology to C. cyperifolium, but it differs in its larger pseudobulbs, rigid leaves, broader pale green sepals, petals with darkly coloured veins and set of V-shaped blotches on the lip midlobe. A phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid (matK, rbcL) DNA sequence data support C. shidianense as related to C. cyperifolium.

A new orchid species, Cymbidium daweishanense, from Yunnan Province, China, is described based on morphological and molecular analyses and illustrated. A detailed comparison between the newly discovered orchid and other members of Cymbidium was conducted. The new plant was similar to C. erythraeum, C. subgenus Cyperorchis, but differs in having smaller flowers, a lip free from even the basal margins of column and a glabrous column with many purple blotches. The phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid (matK, rbcL) sequence data support the status of C. daweishanense as a new species.

Bulbophyllum yongtaiense, a new orchid species from Fujian, China, is described and illustrated based on morphological and molecular analyses. Detailed morphological comparisons indicate that B. yongtaiense is similar to B. kuanwuense, but it can be distinguished from longer scape, fimbriate-ciliate on margins of dorsal sepals and petals, petals with obtuse apex and a lip with finely papillose near base. Molecular analyses based on nuclear ITS and plastid matK, atpI-atpH, and trnL-F DNA sequence data support B. yongtaiense is genetically similar to B. hirundinis and B. pecten-veneris, but it can be distinguished from them by having shorter lateral sepals, petals with obtuse apex and a lip with finely papillose near base.

Helminthosporium species from submerged wood in streams in Yunnan Province, China were studied based on morphology and DNA sequence data. Descriptions and illustrations of Helminthosporium velutinum and a new species H. aquaticum are provided. A combined phylogenetic tree, based on SSU, ITS and LSU sequence data, place the species in Massarinaceae, Pleosporales. The polyphyletic nature of Helminthosporium species within Massarinaceae is shown based on ITS sequence data available in GenBank.

A new orchid species, Cymbidium densiflorum, from Yunnan, China, is described and illustrated here based on morphological and molecular analyses. A detailed comparison between the newly discovered orchid and other members of Cymbidium was conducted. The new plant belongs to C. section Cymbidium and has a pendent inflorescence, thick-coriaceous flowers with two pollinia and rigid leaves, and it differs greatly from all other known species of this section by being a large plant bearing leaves with an acute, oblique apex and producing a long inflorescence with more than 30 purplish brown large flowers, in which the lateral sepals are oblique and narrowly elliptic with a tooth at the apex and narrowly ovate-elliptic petals. A molecular study based on the nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid matK, rbcL, trnG, trnL and atpI DNA sequence data indicated that C. densiflorum is sister to C. paucifolium.

A new orchid species, Liparis funingensis, from Yunnan, China, is described and illustrated in this study based on morphological and molecular analyses. A detailed comparison between the newly discovered orchid and other members of Liparis was performed. This new plant is characterized by an obovate lip and is trilobed. The sidelobes are semiorbicular and fleshy, and the midlobe is short and bilobed with triangular lobes. The disc has a deeply bilobed basal callus and two longitudinal lamellae from the base extending to above the middle. There are four pollinia in two pairs, with each pair exhibiting long caudicles without a viscidium. The rostellum also has a bursa synovialis. These features distinguish this new orchid from all other known species of Liparis. A phylogenetic analysis was subsequently performed to determine the systematic position of this enigmatic species. A molecular study based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid matK DNA sequence data indicates that L. funingensis is a member of L. layardii subclade.

Youngia gongshanensis, a new species of Youngia sect. “Mesomeris” from Yunnan province of China is described and illustrated based on evidence from morphology and molecular phylogeny. The new species is superficially very similar to Y. atripappa having a solitary and erect stem and more or less lyrately pinnatisect leaves, but can be distinguished by capitula with 5–6 (vs. 12–15) florets, corolla tube glabrous (vs. sparsely pubescent with short white spreading hairs), pappus white (vs. grayish), bracts ovate to elliptic, distinct large (vs. very small, subulate). Parsimony analyses based on DNA sequence data of the nuclear ribosomal ITS shows that the new species is sister to Y. cineripappa with strong support, but the new species differs from the latter in having a glabrous corolla tube, smaller capitula with a lesser number of florets, and especially the white pappus.

Bletilla guizhouensis (Coelogyninae, Epidendroideae, Orchidaceae), a new species from Guizhou, China, is described and illustrated in this study based on the morphological and molecular evidence. Based on the morphological comparison, B. guizhouensis is closely related to B. striata, but differs in having ovate-oblong floral bracts, oblong-elliptic dorsal sepal, lip broadly-obovate, lip mid-lobe subelliptic, and disk with 7 longitudinal lamellae. These features distinguish the new orchid from all other known species of Bletilla. Molecular analysis based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid DNA sequence data indicate that B. guizhouensis is a new species.

Acervus is a small genus in Pyronemataceae. Most of the species in this genus have been recorded from China. In the present study, two species of Acervus from Yunnan Province, in southwestern China, were investigated by using morphology and DNA sequence data. This paper introduces two new species A. stipitatus and A. globulosus, with morphological descriptions, and compares them with morphologically similar taxa. Multi-gene phylogenetic analyses inferred from 28S, TEF1 and RPB2 sequence data strongly support the lineages for taxa of Acervus, corresponding to morphological features. We also provide a summarized comparison of the important morphological characteristics of Acervus species.
