AbstractThe problem of optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) is one of the most popular and widely discussed problem in power system engineering all over the world. Optimal reactive power dispatch is one of the sub-problems of the optimal power flow which is complex and nonlinear problem, which can be formulated as both single- and multi-objective. In this paper, the problem has been formulated as a single-objective problem to minimize the active power losses in the transmission lines. A recently proposed powerful and reliable meta-heuristic algorithm known as the JAYA algorithm has been applied to solve the ORPD problem. The algorithm has been applied on the standard IEEE 14, 30, 57 and 118 bus systems. The simulation results using the proposed algorithm when compared with the results from other algorithms and few others reported in the literature prove that the JAYA algorithm is the most superior among all.

This chapter describes grey wolf optimization (GWO), teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO), biogeography-based optimization (BBO), krill herd algorithm (KHA), chemical reaction optimization (CRO), and hybrid CRO (HCRO) algorithms to solve both single and multi-objective optimal power flow (MOOPF) and optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problems while satisfying various operational constraints. The proposed HCRO approach along with GWO, TLBO, BBO, KHA, and CRO algorithms are implemented on IEEE 30-bus system to solve four different single objectives: fuel cost minimization, system power loss minimization, voltage stability index minimization, and voltage deviation minimization; two bi-objectives optimization, namely minimization of fuel cost and transmission loss; minimization of fuel cost and voltage profile; and one tri-objective optimization, namely minimization of fuel cost, minimization of transmission losses, and improvement of voltage profile simultaneously. The simulation results clearly suggest that the proposed is able to provide a better solution than other approaches.

The shift from regulated to restructured power system results in an increased competition among the electricity market. In restructured power system, the separation of transmission services from generation and distribution makes it necessary to find the contribution of power from individual generator to individual load. The power flow tracing method is used to obtain the generator power output to a particular load. The reactive power has to be maintained in order to sustain the voltage level throughout the system for reliable and secure operation. Hence the reactive power cost allocation has become imperative in the power system. In this paper, the tracing method is integrated with the optimal reactive power dispatch problem to trace the generator minimal reactive power for sustaining the real power transaction and enhancing the system security by meeting the demand. The Differential Evolution is used for optimal reactive power dispatch. The cost allocation to the generators for the reactive power service based on the opportunity cost method is obtained for 62 Bus Indian Utility Systems.
