This chapter focuses on the construction as well as the algebraic and dynamical properties of pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms. It first presents five different constructions of pseudo-Anosov mapping classes: branched covers, constructions via Dehn twists, homological criterion, Kra's construction, and a construction for braid groups. It then proves a few fundamental facts concerning stretch factors of pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms, focusing on the theorem that pseudo-Anosov stretch factors are algebraic integers. It also considers the spectrum of pseudo-Anosov stretch factors, along with the special properties of those measured foliations that are the stable (or unstable) foliations of some pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism. Finally, it describes the orbits of a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism as well as lengths of curves and intersection numbers under iteration.

This work considers algebraic integersαof degree≥3for which the rows of the arrays(i,j)partition the set of positive integers. Such an array is called a Stolarsky array. AbstractThe pointwise spectral radii of irreducible matrices whose entries are polynomials with positive, integral coefficients are studied in this paper. Most results are derived in the case that the resulting algebraic function, the beta function of S. Tuncel, is in fact a polynomial. We show that the set of beta functions forms a semiring, and the spectral radius of a matrix of beta functions is again a beta function. We also show that the coefficients of a polynomial beta function p must be real algebraic integers, and p satisfies (after a change of variables if necessary) the inequality for non-zero (and not all positive) complex numbers z1,…,zd. If and the ordered sequence of exponents appearing in p is of the form (m,m+1,…,M−,1,M) for some integers m and M, the same inequality is necessary and sufficient for p to be a beta function.

Summary Gaussian integer is one of basic algebraic integers. In this article we formalize some definitions about Gaussian integers [27]. We also formalize ring (called Gaussian integer ring), Z-module and Z-algebra generated by Gaussian integer mentioned above. Moreover, we formalize some definitions about Gaussian rational numbers and Gaussian rational number field. Then we prove that the Gaussian rational number field and a quotient field of the Gaussian integer ring are isomorphic.
