It is necessary for making the real appearance of human skin sample to deal with not only the spectral reflectance characteristics but also the multi-layer structure and translucency. This paper reported the measurement and analysis of the spectral transmitted and scattering light characteristics. For five subjects, the maximum of transmitted light intensity was resulted at 700 nm near the light source, and decreased with decreasing wavelength. Longer the wavelength, longer the distance which the transmitted light intensity was downing to zero. we defined the average attenuation ratio per unit transmitted light intensity which had the calculation range from 3.5 mm from the light source to the distance that the variation ratio of the transmitted light intensity per unit distance was converged to zero. All subjects’ results showed the peak of the average attenuation ratio at 700 nm and the value were almost 0.5. And they decreased with decreasing wavelength.

Abstract It is useful during drilling operations to know when bit failure has occurred because this knowledge can be used to improve drilling performance and provides guidance on when to pull out of hole. This paper presents a simple polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bit wear indicator and an associated methodology to help quantify wear and failure using real-time surface sensor data and PDC dull images. The wear indicator is used to identify the point of failure, after which corresponding surface data and dull images can be used to infer the cause of failure. It links rotary speed (RPM) with rate of penetration (ROP) and weight-on-bit (WOB). The term incorporating RPM and ROP represents a "sliding distance", i.e. the number of revolutions required to drill a unit distance of formation, while the WOB represents the formation hardness or contact pressure applied by the formation. This PDC bit wear metric was applied and validated on a data set comprised of 51 lateral production hole bit runs on 9 wells. Surface electric drilling recorder (EDR) data alongside bit dull photos were used to interpret the relationship between the wear metric and observed PDC wear. All runs were in the same extremely hard (estimated 35 – 50 kpsi unconfined compressive strength) and abrasive shale formation. Sliding drilling time and off-bottom time were filtered from the data, and the median wear metric value for each stand was calculated versus measured hole depth while in rotary mode. The initial point in time when the bit fails was found to be most often a singular event, after which ROP never recovered. Once damaged, subsequent catastrophic bit failure generally occurred within drilling 1-2 stands. The rapid bit failure observed was attributed to the increased thermal loads seen at the wear flat of the PDC cutter, which accelerate diamond degradation. The wear metric more accurately identifies the point in time (stand being drilled) of failure than the ROP value by itself. Review of post-run PDC photos show that the final recorded wear metric value can be related to the observed severity of the PDC damage. This information was used to determine a pull criterion to reduce pulling bits that are damaged beyond repair (DBR) and reduce time spent beyond the effective end of life. Pulling bits before DBR status is reached and replacing them increases overall drilling performance. The presented wear metric is simple and cost-effective to implement, which is important to lower-cost land wells, and requires only real-time surface sensor data. It enables a targeted approach to analyzing PDC bit wear, optimizing drilling performance and establishing effective bit pull criteria.

Abstract Background A specific walking speed minimizing the U-shaped relationship between energy cost of transport per unit distance (CoT) and speed is called economical speed (ES). To investigate the effects of reduced body weight on the ES, we installed a body weight support (BWS) apparatus with a spring-like characteristics. We also examined whether the 'calculated' ES was equivalent to the 'preferred' walking speed (PWS) with 30% BWS. Methods We measured oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide output to calculate CoT values at seven treadmill walking speeds (0.67–2.00 m s− 1) in 40 healthy young males under normal walking (NW) and BWS. The PWS was determined under both conditions on a different day. Results A spring-like behavior of our BWS apparatus reduced the CoT values at 1.56, 1.78, and 2.00 m s− 1. The ES with BWS (1.61 ± 0.11 m s− 1) was faster than NW condition (1.39 ± 0.06 m s− 1). A Bland-Altman analysis indicated that there were no systematic biases between ES and PWS in both conditions. Conclusions The use of BWS apparatus with a spring-like behavior reduced the CoT values at faster walking speeds, resulting in the faster ES with 30% BWS compared to NW. Since the ES was equivalent to the PWS in both conditions, the PWS could be mainly determined by the metabolic minimization in healthy young males. This result also derives that the PWS can be a substitutable index of the individual ES in these populations.

Transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) has great potential in brain imaging and therapy. However, the structural and acoustic differences of the skull will cause a large number of technical problems in the application of tFUS, such as low focus energy, focal shift, and defocusing. To have a comprehensive understanding of the skull effect on tFUS, this study investigated the effects of the structural parameters (thickness, radius of curvature, and distance from the transducer) and acoustic parameters (density, acoustic speed, and absorption coefficient) of the skull model on tFUS based on acrylic plates and two simulation methods (self-programming and COMSOL). For structural parameters, our research shows that as the three factors increase the unit distance, the attenuation caused from large to small is the thickness (0.357 dB/mm), the distance to transducer (0.048 dB/mm), and the radius of curvature (0.027 dB/mm). For acoustic parameters, the attenuation caused by density (0.024 dB/30 kg/m3) and acoustic speed (0.021 dB/30 m/s) are basically the same. Additionally, as the absorption coefficient increases, the focus acoustic pressure decays exponentially. The thickness of the structural parameters and the absorption coefficient of the acoustic parameters are the most important factors leading to the attenuation of tFUS. The experimental and simulation trends are highly consistent. This work contributes to the comprehensive and quantitative understanding of how the skull influences tFUS, which further enhances the application of tFUS in neuromodulation research and treatment.

Recently, electric vehicles (EV) have gained much attention as a potential enabling technology to support CO2 emissions reduction targets. Relative to their internal combustion vehicle counterparts, EVs consume less energy per unit distance, and add the benefit of not emitting any carbon dioxide in operation and instead shift their emissions to the existing local fleet of power generation. However, the true success of EVs depends on their successful integration with the supporting infrastructure systems. Building upon the recently published methodology for the same purpose, this paper presents a “systems-of-systems” case study assessing the impacts of EVs on these three systems in the context of Abu Dhabi. For the physical transportation system, a microscopic discrete-time traffic operations simulator is used to predict the kinematic state of the EV fleet over the duration of one day. For the impact on the intelligent transportation system (ITS), the integration of EVs into Abu Dhabi is studied using a multi-domain matrix (MDM) of the Abu Dhabi Department of Transportation ITS. Finally, for the impact on the electric power system, the EV traffic flow patterns from the CMS are used to calculate the timing and magnitude of charging loads. The paper concludes with the need for an intelligent transportation-energy system (ITES) which would coordinate traffic and energy management functionality.

Cell migration through extracellular matrices is critical to many physiological processes, such as tissue development, immunological response and cancer metastasis. Previous models including persistent random walk (PRW) and Lévy walk only explain the migratory dynamics of some cell types in a homogeneous environment. Recently, it was discovered that the intracellular actin flow can robustly ensure a universal coupling between cell migratory speed and persistence for a variety of cell types migrating in the in vitro assays and live tissues. However, effects of the correlation between speed and persistence on the macroscopic cell migration dynamics and patterns in complex environments are largely unknown. In this study, we developed a Monte Carlo random walk simulation to investigate the motility, the search ability and the search efficiency of a cell moving in both homogeneous and porous environments. The cell is simplified as a dimensionless particle, moving according to PRW, Lévy walk, random walk with linear speed-persistence correlation (linear RWSP) and random walk with nonlinear speed-persistence correlation (nonlinear RWSP). The coarse-grained analysis showed that the nonlinear RWSP achieved the largest motility in both homogeneous and porous environments. When a particle searches for targets, the nonlinear coupling of speed and persistence improves the search ability (i.e. find more targets in a fixed time period), but sacrifices the search efficiency (i.e. find less targets per unit distance). Moreover, both the convex and concave pores restrict particle motion, especially for the nonlinear RWSP and Lévy walk. Overall, our results demonstrate that the nonlinear correlation of speed and persistence has the potential to enhance the motility and searching properties in complex environments, and could serve as a starting point for more detailed studies of active particles in biological, engineering and social science fields.

This paper describes a method of predicting the direction of crack propagation implemented by user subroutines in the Simulia-Abaqus FEA system with the use of the extended finite element method (X-FEM). This method is based on displacements and stresses according to Westergaard’s solution of Griffith’s crack problem. During the calculations, in each crack increment, the algorithm reads the stresses and displacements in the model around the crack tip, calculates the criterion values at the read points, reduces them to a unit distance from the crack tip, fits a polynomial to these points, and finds the minimum of the function closest to the last propagation angle. The algorithm also decides when the crack grows, depending on a chosen criterion. Four criteria have been implemented to predict the direction of failure propagation: the maximum principal stress criterion, the Ottosen–Podgórski criterion, the new criterion described here based on the minimum component values of the displacement vector, and the maximum circumferential tensile stress (MTS). These criteria were verified in two tests: the three-point bending test of the notched beam and the anchor pull-out test. For these tests, the criterion built into Simulia Abaqus does not correctly define the crack path, which causes the crack propagation direction to “rotate” when simulating the fracture. The criteria developed here, in most cases, determine the crack path and the maximum force very well compared to real laboratory tests.
