Goemai is a West Chadic language of Northern Nigeria, which is at the heart of the Jos Plateau Sprachbund. This chapter explains the ways in which it has been influenced by other languages, especially Niger-Congo languages, but also Hausa and English. This expansion has been especially important in terms of lexicon, although the importance of metatypy cannot be discounted either since the language forms part of a Sprachbund with both Chadic and non-Chadic languages.
