A new species of passion flower from the Cordillera Central of the Colombian Andes is here described; Passiflora kumandayi M.A. Buitrago A. & Coca (subgenus Decaloba, supersection Auriculata). This species, along with five other closely related Andean species, comprise a monophyletic group characterized by paired branched inflorescences and small flowers with short or absent androgynophores. A provisional key to the species in the newly described section Apodae is presented. Passiflora kumandayi is here illustrated and its affinities with related species are discussed based on morphology and phylogenetic binning analysis using molecular site weight calibration.

BackgroundThe use of complementary medicines in those with mental health problems is well documented. However, their effectiveness is often not established and they may be less harmless than commonly assumed.AimsTo review the complementary medicines routinely encountered in psychiatric practice, their effectiveness, potential adverse effects and interactions.MethodElectronic and manual literature search on the effectiveness and safety of psychotropic complementary medicines.ResultsPotentially useful substances include ginkgo and hydergine as cognitive enhancers, passion flower and valerian as sedatives, St John's wort and sadenosylmethionine as antidepressants, and selenium and folate to complement antidepressants. The evidence is less conclusive for the use of omega-3 fatty acids as augmentation treatment in schizophrenia, melatonin for tardive dyskinesia and 18-methoxycoronaridine, an ibogaine derivative, for the treatment of cocaine and heroin addiction.ConclusionsSystematic clinical trials are needed to test promising substances. Meanwhile, those wishing to take psychotropic complementary medicines require appropriate advice.

Successful management of weed infestations requires an understanding of their biology including seedbank longevity The controlled ageing test used by the Millennium Seed Bank Kew Gardens was evaluated for several grass and broadleaf weed seeds The method aims to estimate seed longevity from a seed survival curve using a controlled environment to accelerate seed ageing Eight species were tested nodding thistle (Carduus nutans) white bryony (Bryonia cretica) batwing passion flower (Passiflora apetala) butterprint (Abutilon theophrasti) thorn apple (Datura stramonium) apple of Peru (Nicandra physalodes) broomcorn millet (Panicum miliaceum) and yellow bristle grass (Setaria pumila) The suggested measure of longevity is the point where germination has fallen by 50 (P50) Seed survival tested here did not follow the ideal logistic model for analysis Because of rapid decline in germination the point where seeds no longer germinate (P0) is considered to be a better measure of seed longevity
