The concept of data ownership is vividly discussed. But what does the term really mean? In order to demonstrate the possibilities and limits of the exclusive assignment of data to legal entities the author researches the German law regarding concepts of absolute rights over data – e.g. in data protection law, intellectual property law and also criminal law. As a result, the possible contributions of the concept and term data ownership and approaches for its legal codification are described as well as the limits, which exist for the establishment of data ownership.
