In the article “Single-Digit Subtraction with Fluency” in the December 2003 issue of Teaching Children Mathematics (pp. 230–36), Constance Kamii and Barbara A. Lewis note that subtraction is more difficult than addition for first- and second- grade children. The authors contend that “the educational implication of this research is that we must de-emphasize fluency in subtraction in the first two grades and heavily emphasize addition” (p. 233). They further state, “If children know sums very well, they will be able to deduce differences easily from their knowledge of sums” (p. 233).
