As autonomous robots continue to be deployed near people, robots need to be able to explain their actions. In this article, we focus on organizing and representing complex tasks in a way that makes them readily explainable. Many actions consist of sub-actions, each of which may have several sub-actions of their own, and the robot must be able to represent these complex actions before it can explain them. To generate explanations for robot behavior, we propose using Behavior Trees (BTs), which are a powerful and rich tool for robot task specification and execution. However, for BTs to be used for robot explanations, their free-form, static structure must be adapted. In this work, we add structure to previously free-form BTs by framing them as a set of semantic sets {goal, subgoals, steps, actions} and subsequently build explanation generation algorithms that answer questions seeking causal information about robot behavior. We make BTs less static with an algorithm that inserts a subgoal that satisfies all dependencies. We evaluate our BTs for robot explanation generation in two domains: a kitting task to assemble a gearbox, and a taxi simulation. Temporal interval algebra has generated strong interest for both theoretical and practical reasons. All its Maximal Tractable Subalgebras (MTS) have been identified. Now is the time to make the transition toward their practical applications. In this chapter, the authors have proposed a formalism on how to classify an input temporal network in one of these MTSs or decide its intractability. They have also proposed a linear algorithm for checking consistency when the input belongs to one of the seventeen MTSs, and for finding the constraints responsible for inconsistency in case the network is unsatisfiable.

In this article we defend the idea that theory-based evaluations—contribution analysis, logic analysis, and realist evaluation—are complementary components of a new theory in evaluation. We also posit that we are currently observing the emergence of a fifth generation in evaluation: the explanation generation. Theory-based evaluations have featured prominently in the discourse of evaluators since the mid-1980s. They have developed mainly in response to the need for evaluation of complex interventions. In this article we analyze certain approaches that have matured in their design and application. We use the framework of Shadish et al. to analyze the ontological, epistemological, and methodological foundations of various theory-based approaches in evaluation to appraise their similarities and differences. We observe that all these approaches are grounded in critical realism. Similarities seen in their ontological, epistemological, and methodological positionings, as well as their complementarity in terms of the evaluative questions they address, suggest we may be observing the consolidation of a new theory in evaluation and the emergence of a fifth generation.
