Latin American E-literature and Location: The Nation Revisited in Electronic Literature Organization (ELO)

There are relatively few studies that explore the interdisciplinarity between electronic literature and digital humanities research methods. The present paper addresses this lack by combining close reading and distant reading methodologies to analyze networks of cultural discourses in a corpus of 30 Latin American e-lit works published from 1995 to 2020. To conduct the research, three network graphs were created using Gephi, an open-source software for the exploration and analysis of network visualizations. The graphs study the following relations between the e-lit works and the cultural discourses: the frequency of primary, secondary and tertiary discourses, the degree of multi-discourse, and the degree of cultural discourse co-occurrence. The results show the appearance of unexpected discourse variations and new co-occurrence patterns, the benefits of network graphs for revealing e-lit works’ families, and the potential use of data visualization techniques to study e-lit databases. Overall, the paper demonstrates the utility of digital humanities research methods to further examine electronic literature materials.

Neste artigo, faço uma apresentação das mulheres criadoras de literatura eletrônica latino-americana, a partir de sua localização geográfica e baseando-me em obras incluídas em diferentes bancos de dados e coleções internacionais, bem como uma série de entrevistas com a maioria dos artistas foi realizada como parte da pesquisa. Isso possibilitou a criação de um histograma que apresenta informações a respeito de 43 mulheres criadoras e identifica as relações entre o país de nascimento, o ano de criação do primeiro trabalho publicado e as ferramentas tecnológicas utilizadas. A partir dessa abordagem, pôde-se identificar as primeiras mulheres latinoamericanas tradutoras de literatura eletrônica do inglês para o português e os primeiros trabalhos escritos em outros idiomas (inglês e francês), além do espanhol e do português. Trata-se, assim, de um trabalho que se desenha como uma primeira tentativa de documentar a contribuição das mulheres latino-americanas para a literatura eletrônica.

Death Imagery

The third volume of the Electronic Literature Collection (ELC3) is home to a Latin American technopoetic that resorts to national death imagery and the location of women in fugue under this subject. Particularly, we refer to the electronic literature work untitled Anacrón: hipótesis de un producto todo by Augusto Marquet and Gabriel Wolfson (Mexico), that combines Mexican death folklore with videogames logic. The work focuses on women death as reality of Mexico nowadays, changing the meaning that it has had traditionally. This paper analyses how women are presented in this Latin American production in global contexts of exclusion and violence in Mexico. The objective is to identify the transformation of traditional national elements related to death into a political denounce of the violence suffered by women in the country that are in fugue.

The objective of this article is to define, contribute and analyse to what is called nowadays Latin American electronic literature. Under a predominant global visual culture and following the visual poetry tradition, we aim to define these technopoetics – what –, the reasons to study them – why – and the possibility to develop a method – how. Particularly, we analyse Tatuaje (2014), a work that belongs to the Latin American field regarding the specific context of production and diffusion in this region.
