In September 2005 I was recruited onto the College's new staff and associate specialist (SAS) committee. I answered an advertisement in Hospital Doctor, filled in an application form, attended an interview and now (following my election as cochairman by my fellow committee members) I am honoured to be the first SAS surgeon to sit on the College Council.

The patient who is in hospital after an episode of deliberate self-harm is at risk both of non-fatal repetition (20% in the following year) and of successful suicide later (1–2% in the next year).8 9 Most patients admitted to hospital after self-poisoning are under 25, living unharmoniously with others and nearly all show personality difficulties rather than mental illness.10 11 This article attempts to guide the hospital doctor in the assessment and treatment of such patients.

In case any of you read On Call or Hospital Doctor (I forget which it was before they amalgamated) and believe what you read, I should point out that I did not say what I was recently reported to have said to the House of Commons Select Committee, namely that the secrecy of Distinction Awards should be maintained. It was in fact Mr David Bolt, the Chairman of the Central Committee of Hospital Medical Services (CCHMS) of the BMA, who said this, and I do not agree with him. On the whole, I think more good than harm would come from information being available; but I don't think anyone should ever use his award as part of the subscript to his signature along with his degrees (as a member of our College once did—and probably others equally unwisely).
