Magneto-optical Fraunhofer diffraction on phase 2D domain patterns with Cmm6 and Pab2 symmetry in uniaxial iron garnet films was studied. Domain patterns contain more than 100 elementary cells and have high spatial homogeneity. The diffraction patterns contain up to 10 or more orders of peaks. Possibilities of space-time modulation of optical radiation and multiplication of the modulation frequency both under change of diffraction order as well as amplitude of magnetic bias field strength were shown.

The room temperature magnetoelectric effect was observed in epitaxial iron garnet films that appeared as magnetic domain wall motion induced by electric field. The films grown on gadolinium-gallium garnet substrates with various crystallographic orientations were examined. The effect was observed in (210) and (110) films and was not observed in (111) films. Dynamic observation of the domain wall motion in 800 kV/cm electric field pulses gave the domain wall velocity in the range 30÷50 m/s. Similar velocity was achieved in magnetic field pulse about 50 Oe.

ABSTRACTThe fabrication of one-dimensional magnetophotonic crystals (MPC) composed from Bi-substituted yttrium-iron-garnet films separated by the silicon oxide layers is presented. The enhancement of the Faraday rotation angle is observed at the spectral regions of the photonic band gap edges. The effective Faraday rotation achieves the values up to 1.5 degrees per micron at 1100-nm-wavelength.
