In this paper, a novel phoxonic crystal (PxC) structure composed of silicon, with optimal dual phononic band gap (PNBG) and photonic band gap (PTBG), is presented. Using the finite element analysis method, both the transmission characteristics and dispersion relation of PNBG and PTBG are calculated, and the existence of dual BGs is demonstrated by the means of the analysis of transmission for the PxC structure. The influences of structural parameters on the dual forbidden band characteristics are further explored, the sensitive structure parameters can be determined: the width of elastic beams, the length of square silicon, and the length of square hole. Using the orthogonal test, 25 experimental runs based on 3-factor and 5-level experiment are performed to finish the numerical experimental design and analysis. Four functional relationships can be acquired between the three sensitive parameters and dual BGs. Finally, the unified objective function method is employed to perform the construction of the single objective optimization model for the purpose of obtaining the optimal dual BGs and the corresponding optimal parameter combinations of the PxC structure. Such scheme can be used as the potential optimization way, which may find wide application in the development and design of PxCs.

<p>We present a guided mode resonance grating based on the incorporation of an electro-optic material with monolayer WS2. The grating is designed to exhibit highly selective directional photo-luminescent emission. We study the effect of doubling the grating period via the introduction of an alternating index perturbation. Using numerical simulations, we show that period doubling leads to formation of a photonic band gap and spectral splitting in the absorptivity (or emissivity) spectrum. We anticipate that this effect can either be used to switch on and off the emissivity at a fixed wavelength, or toggle between single- and double-wavelength emission.</p>

AbstractWe demonstrate an electrically-driven metal-dielectric photonic crystal emitter by fabricating a series of organic light emitting diode microcavities in a vertical stack. The states of the individual microcavities are shown to split into bands of hybridized photonic energy states through interaction with adjacent cavities. The propagating photonic modes within the crystal depend sensitively on the unit cell geometry and the optical properties of the component materials. By systematically varying the metallic layer thicknesses, we show control over the density of states and band center. The emergence of a tunable photonic band gap due to an asymmetry-introduced Peierls distortion is demonstrated and correlated to the unit cell configuration. This work develops a class of one dimensional, planar, photonic crystal emitter architectures enabling either narrow linewidth, multi-mode, or broadband emission with a high degree of tunability.

The study of twisted bilayer 2D materials has revealed many interesting physics properties. A twisted moiré photonic crystal is an optical analog of twisted bilayer 2D materials. The optical properties in twisted photonic crystals have not yet been fully elucidated. In this paper, we generate 2D twisted moiré photonic crystals without physical rotation and simulate their photonic band gaps in photonic crystals formed at different twisted angles, different gradient levels, and different dielectric filling factors. At certain gradient levels, interface modes appear within the photonic band gap. The simulation reveals “tic tac toe”-like and “traffic circle”-like modes as well as ring resonance modes. These interesting discoveries in 2D twisted moiré photonic crystal may lead toward its application in integrated photonics.

Abstract A two dimensional Photonic Crystal (2DPC) based eight channel wavelength division demultiplexer is proposed and designed for Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) applications. The circular ring resonator, channel selector, circulator rod, L bend waveguide and linear bus waveguide are essential parts of the proposed system. The system’s functional parameters such as Transmission efficiency, resonant wavelength, spectral width, channel spacing, Quality factor and crosstalk are investigated in this paper. The eight different wavelengths of channels are filtered out by altering the size of channel selector rod, setting the radius of the circle shaped cavity and relative refractive index of circulator rod. Initially the Photonic Band gap (PBG) is manipulated by applying Plane Wave Expansion (PWE) method of the 2DPC structure. The functional parameters are analysed by Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method in periodic and non-periodic structure of the proposed system to arrive normalized transmission spectrum. The resonant wavelengths of designed eight paths of the device are varying from 1420nm to 1460nm with average spectral width and channel spacing are 5.8nm, 5.6nm respectively. The footprint of the device is 286.84µm2. Hence this small device can be implemented for CWDM systems in Photonic Integrated Circuits (PIC).
