Weak natural seismic activity is known from the NE part of the Bohemian Massif. More than 2 200 tectonic events were recorded in this region on the basis of records of seismic stations operated by Institute of Physics of the Earth (IPE) during period 1996–2011. Since 2008 a relatively signifi cant seismic activity has been observed in epicentral area Lašťany situated SE of Šternberk. In this area, 221 tectonic events were observed during period September 2008 – December 2011. Local magnitude of strongest event reached value 2.

On January 6, 2012, a moderate earthquake was observed in a region SE of Poznań (local magnitude ML = 3.6 according to Institute of Physics of the Earth, IPE). In this region, there haven‘t been known any historical earthquakes so far, and no natural seismic activity has been observed up to present. Similar rare occurrences of weak and moderate earthquakes were observed in a region near Kaliningrad in 2004 (sequence of events, local magnitude of strongest event being 5.0) and in south Moravia region near Znojmo in 2000 (local magnitude ML = 2.5). These facts show that even in seismically quiet regions occurence of weak to moderate seismic events (with value of magnitude ranging from 3 to 5) could be expected.

Abstract The National Network of Seismic Stations of Slovakia (NNSS) consists of eight short period and five broadband permanent seismic stations and a data centre located at the Earth Science Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (ESI SAS). The NNSS recorded and detected 11704 seismic events from all epicentral distances in 2018. Totally 86 earthquakes originated in the territory of Slovakia in 2018. This paper provides basic information on the configuration of the NNSS, routine data processing, seismic activity on the territory of Slovakia in 2018 as well as macroseismic observations collected in 2018.

Southern Moravia – a southeastern part of the Czech Republic at the contact of the Bohemian Massif and the Carpathian Foredeep – is one of the regions with the lowest seismic activity in the Czech Republic. Reports on historical earthquakes in this area are sporadic and poorly evidenced, many of the messages are in fact observations of earthquakes originating mainly in Austria. Instrumental seismic monitoring in southern Moravia commenced in 1995. Thereafter only three local earthquakes were observed – magnitude 2.5 event near Hostěradice in 2000, perhaps induced event near Uhřice in 2003 with magnitude of 0.7 and magnitude 1.4 earthquake near Božice in 2006.A sequence of four weak earthquakes in June 2014 is only the fourth occurrence of earthquakes in southern Moravia since the beginning of instrumental measurements. Events originated near Hostěradice (SE margin of the Bohemian Massif), 40 km southwest of Brno. The strongest event reaching local magnitude of 2.0 occurred on June 1, 2014 at 00:43 UTC. It was felt by people close to the epicentre with a macroseismic intensity 4 European Macroseismic Scale EMS-98. A temporary seismic station was immediately installed in the epicentral area. The station recorded two of four shocks and helped to confi rm a focus position of the sequence: 48.95° N 16.24° E, depth 3 km.In 2014 a review of historical earthquakes in this region was conducted using new catalogues of historical earthquakes in neighboring countries in order to avoid confusion between local and regional phenomena. Some new information sources were found. In any case, historical earthquakes in this region are very rare and most of them are poorly substantiated.

Abstract Based on studies of continuous waveform data recorded on broad-band seismograph stations in Africa, Europe and North America, we report evidences for two temporally persistent and spatially localized monochromatic vibrating sources (around 0.036 and 0.038 Hz, respectively) in the Gulf of Guinea, instead of just one source (0.038 Hz or 26 s) found 50 yr ago. The location of the 0.036 Hz source is close to the Sao Tome Volcano, therefore it may be related to volcano processes. However, the 0.038 Hz source cannot be explained with known mechanisms, such as tectonic or oceanic processes. The most likely mechanism is volcano processes, but there is no reported active volcano in source region. Such repetitive vibration sources may provide valuable tools for detecting temporal variation of crustal structure of the Earth.
