The potential of Larix species for reforestation and tree improvement in eastern Canada is stressed. Tree-improvement research should take advantage of the early flowering habit, rapid juvenile growth, and the wide spectrum of adaptability of Larix species and hybrids to maximize wood production on short rotations. The potential of native and introduced species is reviewed. Some research useful to the planter and tree breeder in eastern Canada is presented. Suggestions for further tree-improvement research in Larix are outlined.
