On the Nature of Talk to Children11The research for this chapter was completed in April 1972. Since then the topic of speech to children has received widespread attention. A conference on Language Input and Acquisition was held in Boston in September 1974, and the term “motherese” is beginning to enter the literature. The following references, by no means a comprehensive list of new developments, will bring the chapter somewhat more up-to-date (with thanks to Eve Clark's reading list for a graduate seminar on “Language Input and Register,” held at Stanford University in the winter of 1975): Blount (1972); Broen (1972), Farwell (1973), Garnica (1975), Holzman (1974), Moerck (1974), Nelson (1973), Newport (1974), Phillips (1973), Rūķe-Draviņa (1974), Sachs, Brown, & Salerno (1972), Snow (1972, 1974).
