Blackbody radiation, temperature, and thermodynamic equilibrium give a tightly coupled description of systems (atmospheres, volumes, surfaces) that obey Boltzmann statistics. They provide descriptions of systems when Boltzmann statistics apply, either approximately or nearly exactly. These apply most of the time in the Earth’s stratosphere and troposphere, and in other planetary atmospheres as long as the density is sufficient that collisions among atmospheric molecules, rather than photochemical and photophysical properties, determine the energy populations of the ensemble of molecules. Thermodynamic equilibrium and the approximation of local thermodynamic equilibrium are introduced. Boltzmann statistics, blackbody radiation, and Planck’s law are described. The chapter introduces the Rayleigh-Jeans limit, description of noise sources as temperatures, Kirchoff’s law, the Stefan-Boltzmann constant, and Wien’s law.

In preparation for the redefinition of the International System of Units (SI), five different electronic measurements of the Boltzmann constant have been performed using different Johnson noise thermometry (JNT) systems over the past seven years. In this paper, we describe in detail the JNT system and uncertainty components associated with the most recent National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) determination of the Boltzmann constant: k = 1.380642 9(69) × 10−23 J/K, with a relative standard uncertainty of 5.0 × 10−6 and relative offset of −4.05 × 10−6 from the Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA) 2014 recommended value. We discuss the input circuits and the approach we used to match the frequency response of two noise sources. We present new measurements of the correlated noise of the 4 K on-chip resistors in the quantum-accurate, pseudorandom, voltage-noise source, which we used to estimate the correlated, frequency-dependent, nonthermal noise in our system. Finally, we contrast our system with those used in other measurements and speculate on future improvements.

For material stratified in parallel planes in local thermodynamical equilibrium we have Milne's well-known result thatwhere πF is the constant net integrated flux of radiation, τ is the optical depth and B is the “ergiebigkeit” which is related to the temperature T by the relationσ being the Stefan-Boltzmann constant. If we define the effective temperature by the relationwe have from (1)where T1 is the temperature ar τ = 1. In this note we establish a similar result for extended photospheres where the curvature of the outer layers is properly taken into account.
