A discussion meeting on the biology of chemical carcinogenesis was held at the Royal Society on 27 and 28 May 1976. The participants agreed that the proceedings should not be published, mainly because much that was contributed has just been published (International Agency for Research on Cancer, Scientific Publication No. 12, Lyon 1976), and that I would write a report of the meeting. This report is an interpretation and not just a summary of what went on. In reviewing the meeting I will not give a strictly historical or even complete account, but will consider mostly the lessons that were learned.
