new larger benthic foraminifera is described as Broeckinella hensoni from the upper Maastrichtian Tar-bur Formation of SW Iran (Zagros Zone). In comparison to the type species of the genus, Broeckinella arabica Henson, which also occurs in the Tarbur Formation, the new species has distinctly larger dimensions (e.g., size and thickness of test, chamber height). The first record of a microspheric specimen of B. arabica shows previously unrecorded annular chambers in the final test stage. Therefore, the generic diagnosis is herein emended. In the Tarbur Formation, both B. hensoni n. sp. and B. arabica occur in foraminiferal-algal wackestones. However, B. arabica occurs in a wider range of microfacies, including packstones and grainstones. It is assumed that Broeckinella originated in the Upper Cretaceous with Broeckinella neumannae Gendrot. The upper Albian Broeckinella aragonensis Peybernès is herein transferred to the porcellaneous genus Peneroplis Montfort.

Spiral coprolites from the Upper Cretaceous of North America are poorly known. Enterospirae (fossilized intestines) reported from the Upper Cretaceous Niobrara Formation of western Kansas (Stewart, 1978) were disputed by McAllister (1985), who felt they represented spiral coprolites similar to those described from the Permian by Neumayer (1904). Previously described coprolites from the Upper Cretaceous of Alberta are small, unstructured, ellipsoidal forms thought to derive from a crocodilian or terrestrial, carnivorous reptile of necrophagic or piscivorous habits (Waldman, 1970; Waldman and Hopkins, 1970).

Abstract The Salpeterkop volcano forms part of what has been referred to as the Upper Cretaceous Sutherland Suite of alkaline rocks, an igneous province composed of olivine melilitites, carbonatites, trachytes and ultramafic lamprophyres. Salpeterkop is a remnant of the summit tuff ring structure that surrounds a crater which is almost 1 km in diameter and is filled with epiclastic strata. Five pieces of silicified wood were collected from the crater filled sediments, sectioned and identified as a new species of Cupressinoxylon, C. widdringtonioides. This is the first example of the fossil genus in South Africa. Only one member of the Cupressaceae s.l. occurs in southern Africa today. From the wide and indistinct growth rings in the fossil wood it can be deduced that the local climate was warm and humid with little or no seasonality, in support of global records of a warm Late Cretaceous. The preservation of the crater further signifies the low level of erosion the region has experienced since its emplacement.

The crustaceans from the marine Berivotra Formation, dated as late Cretaceous, from 50 km south of Mahajanga, Madagascar contains macrurans, brachyurans and thalassinideans. Two brachyuran families, Raninidae and Dynomenidae, were previously identified with the genera Notopocorystes, Caloxanthus, Titanocarcinus, Xanthosia, and Dromiopsis. Fragmentary material now also allows the recognition of Dromioidea, Calappoidea and Xanthoidea.

Three new genera and six new species of shallow-marine gastropods are named from Upper Cretaceous strata found mainly in California. The trochidsCidarina cretaceanew species andCidarina betanew species, the ficidBulbificopsis garzanew genus and new species, and the cancellariidMataxa aridanew species are from the Maastrichtian part of the Moreno Formation of north-central California. This is the earliest record ofCidarina, whose previous chronologic range was middle Eocene to Recent.Bulbificopsisis the first record of a Cretaceous ficid from the Pacific slope of North America, andMataxawas previously known only from Upper Cretaceous strata in the southeastern United States and northeastern Brazil. The buccinidEripachya jalamanew species and the fasciolariidCalkota daileyinew genus and new species are from the lower upper Campanian Jalama Formation in southern California.Calkotais also recognized herein as occurring in upper Maastrichtian strata of North Dakota and South Dakota. The new melongenid genus,Pentzia, established forFulgur hilgardiWhite, 1889, is from Campanian strata throughout California; middle Campanian strata on Sucia Island, Washington; and upper Campanian to lower Maastrichtian strata in northern Baja California, Mexico.
