Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) computations have been conducted to investigate the flow and heat transfer between two co-rotating discs with an axial throughflow of cooling air and a radial bleed introduced from the shroud. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models have been coupled with a thermal model of the test rig, and the predicted metal temperature compared with the thermocouple data. CFD solutions are shown to vary from a buoyancy driven regime to a forced convection regime, depending on the radial inflow rate prescribed at the shroud. At a high radial inflow rate, the computations show an excellent agreement with the measured temperatures through a transient rig condition. At a low radial inflow rate, the cavity flow is destabilized by the thermal stratification. Good qualitative agreement with the measurements is shown, although a significant over-prediction of disc temperatures is observed. This is associated with under prediction of the penetration of the axial throughflow into the cavity. The mismatch could be the result of strong sensitivity to the prescribed inlet conditions, in addition to possible shortcomings in the turbulence modeling.

Experiments on the rotating in the air cones with vertex angle β = 120º and flat disc shown that on frequencies Ω ≥ 2.5 hertz exists a qualitative difference in movement for the particles with diameters d ≈ 1 mm and d ≈ 0.1 mm. The particles with d ≈ 0.1 mm move in the near-surface region, the particles with d ≈ 1 mm jump up to 3 cm. Comparison of the spherical and aspheric (ellipsoid with axles d, d and 4 /3 d) particles' kinematics moving shown the inevitability of the large particles jump occurrence. Large particles come to self-oscillation regime by reason of periodically appearance of the Magnus force. Small particles are localized in the velocity layer

To optimise the turbine disc weight and coolant flow requirements, the aspect of improving thermal analysis was investigated. As a consequence, an experimental investigation was undertaken to measure the rates of convective heat transfer. The constant temperature steady state technique was used to determine the local and average heat transfer coefficients on the sides of rotating discs. The effects of coolant flow rates, CW (3000 ≤ CW ≤ 18600) with two types of cavity in-flow conditions and of the rotational speeds, Reθ (from 4×105 to 1.86×106) on the disc heat transfer were studied and correlations developed. For a rotating disc in confined cavities with superimposed coolant flows, Nusselt numbers were found to be higher than those for the free rotating disc without confinement.
