Techniques for rendering permanent volume-phase holograms stored in ferroelectric crystals are discussed. An analysis is developed for the thermal fixing technique. The analysis identifies a phenomenological parameter that indicates whether or not thermal fixing would be successful for a given crystal. The results are applied to explain experimental observations for thermal fixing of holograms in lithium niobate (LiNbO3) crystals.
